Replaced Pink cooland with Red and water pump went

Four cylinder, 2004 Camry (2AZ-Fe), Auto with 98,000 miles.

I am posting this just for the record since I could not find any information on this topic here.

I had to replace my water pump after driving with newly replaced Toyota Red antifreeze from the 8 year old Pink. I drove only two weeks and 1000 miles on it.

I believe that was just a coincidence. Some Camry's water pumps do not last even that long. Even if the coolant was not compatible with Toyota specification, it still could not destroy the pump seals in two weeks.

What do you guys think?

I think the water pump would have failed when it did no matter what coolant you were running. Regards

Sorry for my ignorance. I use Toyota pre-diluted Super Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant in my '06 Tundra. Was planning to use the same in my new to me '05 Camry.

The difference between my pink (I think) and the red?

Thanks in advance!!

Fred

Slightly different ingredients. The red is better for older style heater cores and radiators. The pink is better for newer stuff.

The aluminum system only Pink (Super Long Life) coolant is 1/2 a Dexcool with only the Sebacic acid and not the 2EHA The 2EHA is a plasticizer and can soften nylon-6,6 and silicone gaskets in systems not designed for it. Otherwise it's actually a pretty good coolant for all kinds of metals. Toyota used phosphates in place of 2EHA of Dexcool so they can continue to use nylon-6,6 and silicone gaskets.

The Red (Long Life Coolant) and the aftermaket Valvoline Zerex Asian vehicles formula are similar and use sodium benzoate and phosphates as the inhibitors. They work to protect all kinds of metals. IMO it's a better coolant than the Pink as far as corrosion protection.

Neither should eat out the new pump in 2000 miles (even the old green silicated coolant on cheap pumps with rubber seals). What brand was the pump. Sounds like you got a defective pump, even if it has the cheap rubber seal instead of a carbide seal.

I probably did not put it clear enough: that was still the old pump. It just for the last 1000 miles pumped Red antifreeze.

The short answer is the Red is fully forward compatible. Pink backward compatibility cleared by Toyota (TSB - PG010-02) but has since been debated. I have almost 200k on 02 2.4, 155k on 00 1.8 both running Red. 2 different Toyota engines, neither show any signs of water pump problems. How was the fluid exchange performed? ie high pressure flush can damage the prop.

It's probably a coincidence. And with the belt tensioner then belt tension shouldn't be a problem. Dunno.

Definitely a coincidence. The 2002-2003 Camrys used the red coolant but I read online that in "approx. mid 2004" is when Toyota started using the pink coolant in the Camrys. Either coolant should have worked well with the water pump in Your car. At almost 100,000 miles Your 5th. generation Camry water pump was very likely at the end of its life. Some of them crap out way before then.

The second generation Camry water pumps are another story. The one in my old 1989 Camry had 165,000 miles on it when I changed it out. Was still working fine with no leaks or noise. I was replacing my timing belt at the time so I decided to get it replaced while I was in there.
