Is there not an instrument idiot warning light to remind you that your e-brake is on?
Read your state's MV drivers license manual along with the operating your vehicle part in the owners manual. I'll give you a hint: something along the lines of applying the brake, putting vehicle in park, turning off the ignition, or similar directions, will be mentioned when parking or shutting off the vehicle.
Obviously, its rocket science and we can't expect the majority of mouth breathers to figure it out.
Majority of society need to go back to the basics. Start with hooked-on-phonics, single digit math, paying attention, riding a tricycle, and then maybe move up to driver training.
A moderator should just lock this thread. Trying to justify being a bad driver with a thread is foolish.
Its akin to: how many people drive with bald tires? how many drive with no tire pressure, or haha no motor oil? how many drive at night with no headlights? how many don't have working taillights? how many don't wipe their arse? how many don't use turn signals? how many roll through stop signs?
Around here, you'll can get a citation if the parked vehicle roles, or just another added offense to your annoying parking ticket as a further insult. I know of a few PDs, when bored, will simple look for that added revenue checking every car in a public/campus lot or while parked on the street.
In this day and age, we should stop promoting stupidity and illegality.
Wow, rant much? Jeez...

You have a right to an opinion...
I never use the parking brake. It's basically an item from the past. An antique whose time has passed.
Always use the parking brake. Habit. Makes it easier to shift (IMHO) if the weight of the vehicle is being held by the tires/parking brake instead of the transmission.
I'm using my parking brake as my habit. Everytime I park my car, my leg automatically moves to engage the parking brake. Likewise, I use signal as my habit including backing up or a small change in my directions - the reason that I can only drive with my left hand if I have to use my other hand to hold something else.

DOH!
Is that why they call it an "emergency" brake???????
Spend some comical time at the local boat ramp just watching people load and unload their boats. Some people have not one bit of common sense; the number of idiots that slam their cars in to park on a 25% slope then load the boat on the trailer and then can't get the car back into gear as the parking pin is jammed with all the force on it. Or better the pin that slips out as they stand there watching the vehicle and trailer submerge out of site the boat still attached to the trailer by the front winch cable now has it's ass straight up out of the water until water rushes in through the bowrider front end and the boat submerges too. Happens more than you'd think insurance consider it to be an off road incident no coverage for many. Proper use of a working parking brake and a sprinkle of common sense avoids all this. Ramp watching better then TV and no commercials and no end to idiots so far. Watching people back a trailer up that have a hard time driving forward adds to the comedy. Just Because the boat and trailer are attached to your car does not give them insurance coverage if you back into the dock full speed.
If every car had a handbrake between the front seats accessible to passenger and driver how many lives would be saved when a driver has a heart attack or other health issue at the wheel and the passenger can stop the car safely? just a thought on the positive side. Try pushing a foot brake from the back seat!
I don't know why this is such a huge deal to many of you, it is mostly personal preference for everybody. I will use it on occasion but I always turn my wheels against the curb when I'm parked on a hill....in the event that my transmission may fail (a very rare occurrence, I will assure you), it would merely roll into the curb. Whatever.
Like I said, all personal preference.

I have an autobox, so I never use my parking/e-brake. If I am on a very steep hill I will but that about 1 % of the time I drive and park my car.

If the parking brake doesn't work or hold the vehicle while parking, it won't work too well as an emergency brake. In case of emergency, like sudden acceleration or a catastrophic brake failure, it can be used to assist in stopping the vehicle. The terminology, e-brake, parking brake, or emergency brake, is synonymous.
What happens when somebody bumps your car bumper while parking in a lot for example and your transmission Jumps out of park your car now rolls across the isle and hits another car or pins a person. Who do you think is at Fault in a private parking lot? You are 100% unless there are Good witnesses and the other driver stays on site then at least it's still 50-50 fault. now it's your insurance that's going up. All because your to stupid to use what you were equipped with for free THE PARKING BRAKE!
I blame Auto manufactures some for using the Term Park on a gear shift without having the parking brake automatically apply.

I hope you use the parking brake as well this is the proper way to park on a hill. Without the brake your car can still easily be pushed over most curbs just with a bump from another car. Sometimes it doesn't take as much as you'd think to move a car.
Luckily the scenario does not happen much or is it we don't hear about it.
I know a Dad that left his little girl in the car; she was pretending to drive He thought it was funny until she hit the gear shift hard and the car started down the hill in Toronto. Was not funny he ran the doors were locked.
So if you think I'm a little nuts about this parking Brake it's a issue. Learn from others mistakes. Check your parking brake to see it works well.
On most rear Drum Brake equipped vehicles the parking brake cable also adjusts the rear Drum brakes every time it is applied.
The Driver is responsible for the car they drive not the owner; so if a parking brake or any safety items doesn't work don't just say it's my husbands or friends car; your responsible under the law; you will be charged not them.
It's just personal preference. To me, I use it as my habit, which means I DON'T HAVE TO think everytime I park my car. There is no bad thing at all for using the parking brake. My experience is always like: people do something unusual without any problem, but bad things happen to me if I do that, which means I'd rather stick to the standard/proper way.
