Cabin air filter old and new...

So I accidentally tripped upon a video on how to replace the cabin air filter and saw that the glove box opened pneumatically...gently, NOT with a loosy goosy flop like mine....

So I decided to see what was wrong and in the process decided to change the filter...easypeasy and fixed the door in the process

...the gas canister that connects the golve box door to the glove box frame was just flopping around
...it was not hooked up to the glove box frame and so without that resistance the plastic piston that attaches to the door couldn't pull out of the gas canister

I hooked the top of the canister to the frame, and after pulling out the piston I attached the bottom again to the door (after the filter was replaced), and when the glove box door opens it now drops smooth as silk...

Here's the oldie and the new replacement...who knows how old this filter is....it just may be the ORIGINAL factory installed one...

Sadly, many dealerships will pop the shock absorber off the glove box when they check the cabin air filter and will not re-install the shock absorber back as it should be....especially if you do not allow them to replace the filter at a cost of a zillion dollars.

That little "oversight" ("many dealerships...will not re-install the shock absorber back as it should be") is the 3rd annoying distracting detraction I've dealt with where there is otherwise much attention to detail...

Distacting because of their sounds, detracting because it made the car sound cheap, and annoying because two were service tech neglects, and the other a simple engineering detail that was an easy fix...

...the other service oversight was neglected placement of soundproofing foam on the inside of the passenger door shell that had been replaced...causing a hollow tin-roof clang everytime it shut...gluing some foam to the inside of the outer shell restored the "thud" I hear from the other 3 doors...

....the technical oversight was a rattattatt rattle caused by (two unsecured) bolts clanging inside tubular sleeves of the black engine cover...on the 05 engine 4 bolts rise from the valve cover to slip into the engine cover, two upfront secured with acorn-type nuts, two at the rear just slip inside (with no nuts) and rattle against the plastic sleeves...that was solved with a bit of electric tape around the bolts to fill the empty space and cushion the bolts against the sleeves and eliminating the rattle...

I've been lucky enough to solve them without relying on "expert" techs at Toyo charging "a zillion" for their expertise...

The sound insulating engine cover has two rubber donuts to prevent that rattle.
Do your engine a favor and toss that engine cover into the trash. Let the engine breathe.

I have to change my cabin air filter at every oil change interval. I wish mine looked that 'clean' after usage. Its gets pack with leaves, grass, pine needles, and condo developments from the field critters.

The used cabin air filter looks like one of those Fram charcoal filled jobs. The charcoal doesn't do squat. Stick with a Wix or Purllator filter. Merry Christmas. Regards

Just yesterday Jiffy Lube wanted to sell me a cabin air filter for $60 on my '06 XLE ... LOL, I buy them on Ebay for $7. I recently purchased a charcoal filter for my '07 XLE, never again! They give you a dry odd smell and smell swampy after sitting for a while even when new. I bought 2, that will be my last 2!

Be careful with the tabs on the glove box door end, mine broke on my '06 Tacoma.

What has been bothering me lately is the exhorbitant overcharging for parts by indie shops...I left one when they started charging me 300% OVER RETAIL (about the same per cent as your $40 price overcharge for that filter).

Oldie was a Purolator by the way...the Wix is in...and yes, one must take care not to squeeze the sides any more than is needed to free them from the frame...

Enjoy your Toy

I've not only had mice leave seeds, etc., in the cabin air filters of both my Camry and Highlander, one apparently got trapped in the Highlander ventilation system and died! Very strong dead animal smell for several days. I got rid of it by spraying Lysol into the cowl intake with the fan running full blast and no cabin air filter installed. Never have figured out how they got in but I now have mousetraps in my garage and have caught a couple.

How do you connect the gas canister that connects the golve box door to the glove box? Mine fell out while replacing the filter

If the box door just drops/flops down the canister has come off the pin (on the side of the glove box frame) that holds it in place...

There is a pin coming from the right side of the box frame...

Slip the TOP hole of the canister over the pin...with the two holes facing towards the front of the car...and then screw it back to the box at the bottom...

Thank you so much! I had opened my dash when I bought this car last year to check if it had an easily reachable cabin filter and wondered what that flapping thing was! Now my glove box feels like luxury, lol. Replaced my cabin filter with a $5 ebay one too. It also looked like the OP's picture. It was -nasty-. Ew. The blower certainly breathes easier now!
