Trip Computer - Gen 5

Good day!

Great forum you guys have here. I have been scrolling through the threas for quite a while, and have found a lot of interesting reads.

I reside in Sydney, Australia and have a Camry Sportivo powered by the 4 cylinder 2AZ-FE. This model misses out on a trip computer which details things like distance to empty, average fuel consumption e.t.c.
This feature is available on another variation of the Camry, also powered by the 2AZ-FE. I was just wondering if there is a trip computer in all basic 2AZ-FE model Camry's in which Toyota has not enabled.
Would a simple computer flash or something similar enable the trip computer?

Thanks!

Thankyou for the scan Terrynham!
As you probably know, the 2.4L Sportivo only has the "Type A" trip computer with only the speed warning. I just wanted to know if anyone has done mods to the 2.4L Sportivo to get the more comprehensive "Type B" trip computer with the many extra functions.

you will need to call toyota to change the clock unit which is behind the middle panel and probably have to install the sensors and stuff. do some more wiring to the dashboard and probably have to update the ECU in some way too. i personally i really don't need it

HRT: after filling a full tank how far have you travelled until the feul light comes on? i do around 400-420km and there is probably 10L of fuel left when the light comes on so damn...

thats like 14L/100km

what the?

most of the time i keep the revs under 3500rpm and i haven't done any high way driving recently.

Hi Migoreng,

Its good to see a fellow Sydneysider with a 2.4 Sportivo.

In regards to your fuel consumption question, your Sportivo does seem to drink a lot! Usually i get around 430kms before i fill up, and the fuel light hasn't come on at this stage. Usually it only takes around 50 litres to fill up, give or take 3-4 litres. My fuel consumption equates to around 11-12L/100kms.

Do you have an MSN contact?

Edit: Upon further thought regarding the trip computer, the 2.4L Ateva has the comprehensive trip computer. My bets are that all the sensors have been wired to every Camry as it would be the most efficient method for mass production. I don't understand why we would have to change the display panel when you have to press the "Mode" button to get the extra display settings anyway.
I think its a simple matter of flashing the ECU to enable the comprehensive trip computer. I wonder if any Toyota techs would help me...

well only way to find out is to ask toyota

yeah my feul consumption is a little too high. you got an idea of how they actually test the feul consumption and the driving style to get the manufacturers claimed usage?

i also have a drop in k&n air filter but i doubt that would increase usuage significantly.

my msn is jasonung@hotmail.com

Hi Migoreng,

Do not go by those fuel consumption stickers on new cars. They are inaccurate to say the least. The figures achieved on these stickers do not correlate to real world driving. Apparently they achieve these low figures by cruising very sedately at a set speed, and accelerate very slowly if needed to replicate "city" driving. In the real world, these test methods are downright dangerous as they hold the flow of traffic. Also factor in airconditioning and the condition of the roads as well as the direction of the wind and weather conditions... Also the sticker figures are probably achived by pumping up the tires to 45PSI or more.

Added you to my MSN contact list.

Edit: Also with the K&N Filter, you should be getting the same if not better fuel consumption, since the filter is less restrictive. Have you noticed any power increases with the filter?

ah okay...

nah i don't notice any power increase. however i think induction noise is slightly louder.

its been over a year so i can't remember if feul consumption went up or down. if i can get the stock paper filter from somewhere and drive around on a full tank then i could possibly tell which is better and if there is a power loss.

Good ay Mates,

My Gen 5 has only the Time & Temp displayed. I wonder if the trip computer was even an option in the states.
