5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just bought an '05 Camry and discovered the annoying buzzer that goes off non-stop when a certain load is detected in the passenger seat. I carry several bags with me wherever I go, and typically have 1-2 of them on the passenger seat. Apparently, they are heavy enough to be detected, causing the blaring of this alarm.
I have started driving around with my passenger side seat belt always buckled, but was wondering if there was a better way around this problem. Here are some ideas I have, I would really appreciate if someone can tell me how to go about carrying them out:
1) Is there a way to just disable this feature?
2) Where is the sensor that detects the seatbelt being buckled? Is it the receiving end of the seat belt, detecting that the seat belt is buckled or is it something in the seat belt mechinism that detects when it is pulled out? If it's in the receiving end, perhaps I can find a comparable seat belt buckle at a junkyard and just buckle that in rather than always having the seat belt stretched across the seat.
on my car it had the seat-belt bulb on the dash that would light up when i wasnt buckled, and i hated buckling up. eventually i took the bulb out of the dash, but in the meantime, i took a seatbelt buckle from a junkyard. i cut the buckle halfway so when u put it into the seat belt slot you cant even see it, but when u press the button it still pops out so u can grab it. maybe its too much trouble, but i just didnt want to see it, so i cut it off. hope that gives you an idea
Simply put you will have to attack the speaker that makes the buzz noise and disconnect it. the switch mechanism is too touchy to fiddle with and it turns your air bag off. For right now, I have the passenger constantly buckled. It is inconvenient when a passenger wants to ride in that seat though.
If you figure it out, take pics and let us all know!
I just purchased a 2005 Matrix XR and also annoyed by the buzzer. I have emailed Toyota to see if they would provide some info on how to disable the buzzer safely. Maybe if enough people inquire about this issue, they'll take some action.
I contacted Toyota as well and they basically told me it was a federally mandated saftey item. I know that is BS as other car makers have 2005 model for sale that don't include this.
Toyota also gave me a lecture about not tampering with safety equipment, blah, blah, blah. I have filed 2 complaints so far with them about this system not having an option to be disabled and how I already have a mother and don't need another one telling me about my seat belt.
Maybe Toyota will listen and if nothing else make it easier for a slightly motivated indiviual to disable it. I can understand them not wanting to put in a simple on/off switch, but jeeez they should have made it so that it's one easy to find wire to cut to disable the sound and leave the damn airbags out of it.
Looking at the camry wiring diagrams, I see many possibilities now. I just need the garage time to fiddle with it and figure out the best option.
My dad just had the light on his '03 Camry which I've kind of learned to ignore.
But on his '05 Corolla, OMG that thing is annoying. Im just doing something which takes 5 secs and then im going to buckle up. But then suddenly BEEP BEEP.
But i think it's speed sensored. I think it will beep only if you go above 10mph. But i'm not sure on that. The other stupid thing is it's beeped when the car is stopped.

It's lame like the DRL's can't be disabled on the gen4.
But FYI, it is law to wear a seat belt. I think my dad got a 90$ ticket for not wearing one.

Yeah I know, and that is not the issue. I do wear mine.
The problem comes in on the passenger side and equipment/gear that I carry with me everyday to do my job. I have child seats properly fastened in the rear, so unless I want to take them out (and risk them being loose) of my car everyday I have to put stuff in the passenger seat.
Putting stuff in the passenger seat means the F^%@@%ing alarm goes off unless the belt is buckled.
My solution is to just buckle the belt behind the seat. Then when people want to get in the car its a big fricken hassle. My life would be less complicated if I could turn the alarm on/off with a switch for the passenger seat.
My trusty gen 3 that I have had for 10 years, I don't have this problem with. It's only the gen 5.5 which I am slowly regretting buying....
I have an 03 camry and there is no alarm when I put something heavy on the front seat, just the flashing icon where the clock is which is easily ignorable, I would just put everything on the floor if I had that buzzer
I have no problem wearing my seatbelt, and yes it is the law, but so is obeying the speed limit, is the next feature to be added a buzzer when I go over 60 mph? Or if I run a red light or stop sign, will my seat give me a shock?
Sorry, a little sarcasm. Anyway, outside of this minor annoyance, I do like my Matrix. I am coming from driving American SUVs for the last 10 years and finally gave up on poor gas mileage and even poorer reliability. If this is the only problem I have to deal with my Matrix, no problem!
NO, you can't turn it off. My suggestion. Lighten the load, or hook the seat belt. Once that airbag light turns on, it's reading the weight. The airbag won't turn on unless there's over 40 lbs of weight pressure on the seat. I checked. My brother weighs over 60 lbs and the airbag is still off. Anyways, if you don't like it, don't put the stuff there. I stopped putting my bag there for quite some time.
And man, you guys don't know how much time Toyota put their research into their cars. The buzzer's there for your safety. Everytime, my dad doesn't put on his seatbelt when he gets in my car before. Now that I have that feature, it's handy because it annoys him to the point to put on his seatbelt without having me pestering him. I give thumbs up for this feature. That's my opinion though.
