Gen5 Has Any Gen 5.5ers Taken Off Their Lower Compartment?

The piece below the main dashline where the compartment with the roll-open lid is. Under the deck, in front of the shifter. If anyone has or wouldn't mind doing it, i would really appreciate a picture of the mechanism for the compartment lid. Mine doesn't catch to stay closed and i've concluded that there must be a missing part because i noticed a stray little catch that doesn't touch anything on the right side if i remember correctly.

If you haven't been back there yet, it's a very simple procedure. just need a flathead screwdriver (tape with masking tape to prevent scratching) and just pry the frame piece around the shifter/e-brake first. pry around the edges to free the little clips (they snap right back in) and then just lift the compartment section from the bottom to release from those clips. I'd like a picture of both sides of the compartment lid's gears/plastic thingamajigs, and one side should have a bigger plastic piece. TIA.

No, I just kept mine in. It's quite handy. I have two compartments in one! I put all my "important" beneath the lid as I keep gum, notepads, etc. at top.

Also, if you're lid doesn't close, it might mean that there's something caught towards the end of the compartment.

I didn't mean taking out the compartment permanently, i took it out to wire some cathode lights from the power wires to the cig lighter. my compartment lid wouldn't close prior to me taking it apart, and there is nothing in there. i've taken it apart, studied the mechanism for the lid for some time, took it apart, put it back together, and i am dumbfounded on how it was supposed to act as a push push catch so i conclude that there is a missing piece.

Honestly, with your scenario, I have no clue what the problem is. But in your case, it could be that you misattached a piece somwhere.

once again, i will mention that the lid stopped closing before i took anything apart. in fact, i was away in college when it stopped working and my parents were driving the car. i come home and it doesn't close. i'll probably just take it to the dealership but they take so damn long with anything that i could easily just do it myself if i knew what it's supposed to look like, and if it is indeed a missing piece, i can go all around my console and look for it.

MOre than likey you are just going to have to replace it with a new one if you want it to work. If you take it to the dealer that is more than likely what they are going to tell you also. Those things have small parts and I dont think you can buy just the pieces to repair them. I would suggest you find one in a junk yard and pull it to reeplace yours. Or order it from the dealer and replace it.
