A neighbor of mine has a 2007 Camry, and always turns off her AC before she turns off the vehicle, and back on only after the car has started back up, to avoid putting a toll on her battery. I recall with a friends 2005 Lexus ES that you can hold an AC control down while you start your car, which engages a mode that automaticaly delays the start of your AC by a few seconds when you start the car to avoid having to do this yourself. You only have to set this up once, and going forward, it "knows" what to do. I have tried to search for this hidden key combination, but have had no luck finding it in either Lexus or Toyota forums.
Can someone please tell me if this can be done with her car too?
So even though the AC light comes on right away, you are saying that the compressor doesn't so it isn’t putting an extra toll on the battery? As I previously, mentioned Lexus allows you to program the system to not even have the light come on for a few seconds at startup, so the system is definitely off, and there is no way that having the AC on makes startup harder on the vehicle.
That is what she has been doing, I just htought that I could save her the setp by programming the system to come on by itself after a short delay. From what I faintly recall, it involved holding the AC ON button (or some other button) down while starting the vehicle, and from there on, it did it by itself everytime.
You will notice that the compressor kicks out while the engine is cranked. Your neighbor is behaving as if she had an add-on unit from 1957. Don't worry about this nor your battery. Toyota already worried about it for you.
I'm kind of like her myself. No real reason for it, but sometimes I don't want the ac on till I have backed out of the driveway and started moving down the street. Maybe I can get on a reality show for OCD.
A/C compressor engaging has been delayed on start-up for many, many years. I think it is actually controlled by the ECM, much like the ECM controls the A/C compressor disengaging with heavy driver throttle (acceleration) conditions.
Your brilliant (and apparently obsessive) neighbor is just wearing out the AC switch... Every vehicle I have driven in recent years delayed accessories coming on until after the engine was started.
