Under the impression that it might be nylon in some models and stainless steel in others. I've been meaning to remove mine for a looksy.
If its nylon, I'd recommend hitting the dealer for a new one. If its stainless, I'd spray it clean.
With quality oil and reasonable change intervals, we should never need to look at it. But, with all the abused and neglected cars out there, especially if purchased used, its worth an inspection.
If you have a rough idle or stalling, its definitely worth pulling.
You can also test the valve for function and measure its resistance.
Do you already know where it's located on 2AZ-FE? Take pictures if you do take it.
Per that post on celica looks like the filter itself is seperate and inside a seperate bolt. Yep, I too am curious to get a look at it more than a need to clean...
Look for an electrical connection somewhere on the head. That is the solenoid that allows engine oil pressure to activate the camshaft mechanism that controls valve opening at higher throttle openings. The screen should either be after the solenoid or close by in a plug arrangement. Regards
