I am interested in buying a new 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid from a dealership here, in Nova Scotia, Canada.
When I went to see the camry at a local dealership, they opened the hood to let me have a look at the car's components. I noticed a certain metal plate in the engine area (I don't know much about cars so I can't describe where it is :P) that was all rusty. I was concerned, and asked the dealer why it was rusting already. The dealer was surprised to see it when I pointed it out, since the car is brand new and had just arrived at the lot. The service department was closed at the time, so they couldn't ask a mechanic... But the dealership manager came to take a look and said "Oh it's probably because on normal non-hybrid cars, that part of the engine is under the car, so you wouldn't notice the rust. But it's perfectly normal".
This answer doesn't seem right to me, and seeing as how I know nothing about cars, I thought this forum could help me answer the question of why there is rust here! I have attached a picture of the hybrid under the hood, that I found in the gallery on this website. I have added a red arrow pointing to the cylindrical-y metal area that was rusted on the hybrid I had seen.
Any input from the experts here would be appreciated!
Welcome to NS. Any metal, that is not painted, will rust in this car eating province. The heat shield, due to the extreme temperature, will not stand a chance. If you look at any new car, on any lot, you'll see rust somewhere. High temp paint will extend the life span. Why the manufacturer doesn't do this, is beyond me.
the thing that is rusting is the heat shield. I wouldnt be concerned about it. Most all heat shields i've seen have rust because its kind of a very cheap part. Heck i dont even know where the heatshield on my camry went?!
Yep, this was the big hype regarding the Camry, how it would be the first Toyota hybrid made in the US....

Could be. Hard to find Hybrid VIN's on the dealer new car inventory searches, at least in my area -- all of my dealer's allocation of Hybrids for the rest of the year, at least, are already reserved for people on their waiting list. But, there are four Camry Hybrids on eBay right now -- all with "J-number" VIN's....
I still say that is a J-Car and the "rust" is from the ship passage over the ocean. I have a J-Car and I have rust underneath the cover on the manifold too. No big deal to me.

The first set of Camry Hybrids will be produced in Japan. In October, Toyota's will begin producing approximately 4,000 Camry Hybrids per month in its Georgetown, KY, plant, where it currently turns out Camrys at the rate of 30,000 per month.
Also, since Toyota now has Subie's production capacity, I heard they will now shift prodiuction of the Camry Hybird there.
