Hey everyone, i was just wondering if putting aftermarket wheels would be possible on the TCH. Does the camry hybrid use special tires (b/c it's a hybrid) or just reg. tires? Also, what is the offset for the camry? Thanks in advance!
I believe the offset for 07 Camry is +45mm. I was told by someone that the TCH cannot use aftermarket wheels, due to the new-fangled transmission not being calibrated for anything other than the stock wheel size, but I'm not sure I believe that story. I can see that type of an effect on the suspension, but not the transmission, unless this new transmission is so finely tuned that any difference in suspension would also impact how the transmission gauging the current moment in time. I really like the 18" TRD wheels and was considering upgrading to those on my TCH.
Only thing that looks special are the valve assemblies on the rims. According to the manual, each valve has a small electronic transmitter that tells the ECM when a tire is low and it turns on a warning light. This is why they say heavy window tinting can disrupt this signal. I guess the tire press warning light may blink if the TCH wheels are swapped out.
Sorry, I should have read that whole chapter first. It also says that even if the factory rims are used that the system may not work with some types of tires. Also, if the system does not see any of the tire valve press transmitters, it will be disabled automatically. I guess that means the light wont stay on and bug the hell out of you.
hmm alrite thanks for the input guys. so a couple questions.
where are those valve assemblies actually located, on the rim itself?
and aren't all car transmission only calibrated for the oem tires and wheels?
it sounds like aftermarket wheels/tires could be possible...
the TCH would also look sweet!
The Tire Pressure Monitoring System is becoming standard on all Toyotas, not just the TCH. The monitors are in the valve stems, and can be transferred to (some!) aftermarket wheels.
Regarding the transmission comment, as long as the overall tire diameter remains the same, there shouldn't be any problem.

There is a whole sensor and transmitter thing-a-ma-bob that is INSIDE the wheel assembly. So I wonder if any/all aftermarket wheels would be compatible with this device?

so let's just say that i do swap out my wheels and tires and put in regular valve asslemblies (that don't transmit tire pressue). and according to maynard about the valve pressure transmitters being disabled, as long as i continuously monitor the pressure in the new tires, it should be good fine? can anyone confirm?
also, you think there is really such thing about the transmission?
ok that "continuously" was pretty ambiguous. what i meant was, let's just say every weekend i check the pressure in the tires to make sure it's optimumly inflated. hows that?

I frequently check my tire pressure even with working transmitters. Every tire problem I've had (not too many thank goodness) have occured while I've been driving. Mostly picking up a nail or similar which resulted in a leak fast enough to not wait until my next check. Had I had an active tire pressure monitoring system it would have saved me changing a tire on short notice or in a dangerous location. I think TM included those for a good reason.
Personally I think these active transmitters are just being positioned so TM can introduce run flat tires (where active monitoring is mandated by law) and scrap the spare. The additional trunk space especially in the HV and reduced cost of the spare tire assembly would be enormous.

Dont laugh but because this vehicle is still kinda new, you'll probibly have a tough time waiting for someone to confirm that the warning light disables itself if no transmitters or on the car.
Again dont laugh but you could always put the front and rear on jack stands and remove all 4 wheels and roll them away from the car. Carefully start her up and check for the warning light.
I guess its what I would try being old school and all.
hahaha!!!
i laughed out loud with that one.
lol
looks like i'll be picking up some jack stands tomorow haha jus joking
nah you're right tho..it will be a while.
so i have a question, do all of you have that optional navigation with the lcd screen? b/c i don't have it, no need in hawaii, but so what if i get a flat, will somelight pop up on the cluster guages? is that what they are called?
I am new to the forum. I am purchasing a Hybird next week and will be wanting to get 18 inch wheels and tires. I have came across a few that will fit. I just want to know if the size rim will be ok and the size tire 225/45 would be ok. If I went bigger on tires, how much can I go without rubbing with same size rim of 18? Anyway, I do like the TRD alloy wheels. Does anyone have a picture of these wheel on a car or does anyone have pictures of what they have? TRD or ASA chrome 18" wheels are what I am looking at. Thanks!
