tch hybrid...4cy, 147 hp.................other 4 cy camrys...4cy 158hp, different engines, tch 4 cy, designed to work with the electric components, and combined make for a slightly faster car than the conventional 4 cy camrys.
phew.. so many misconceptions flying around lol. I'll help clear things up.
1) The TCH has the SAME engine (2AZ-FE) as the regular 4 cylinder Camrys. However, it's running on the Atkinson cycle which sacrifices power for improved efficiency (that's something that the HiHy/RX do NOT have). With the hybrid, the battery takes up the slack in providing extra power.
2) The TCH is a FULL hybrid which means it can run on electric only, gas only or BOTH at the same time. Power is fed through the electric motor (MG1) (via the Power Split Device or PSD) which powers the wheel. MG2 helps regenerate and also acts as a starter for the engine.
Mild (or Assist) hybrids use the engine as their primary source of power with the battery kicking in to ASSIST the engine. You can think of those cars as having an electric supercharger on board. The electric motor is sandwiched between the engine and the transmission.
Hope that helps guys.
Anything else needs clearing up? hehehe.

Yes - can we get more electric motor output by adding battery packs, and what is the procedure for obtaining and installing these?
Google the Prius plus project.
Wher you add extra battery packs, and add in a plug-in wall charger to top off the battery packs at night.

If you increase the battery packs or replace the current one with denser pack, you should be able to get more juice.
However, those of us who are looking at Li-Ion or adding battery packs are doing so to minimise the use of the engine and maximise the use of EV mode. These packs (which void the warranty btw) have the ability to be charged by a wall socket and thus becoming a plug-in hybrid. Also note the weight issue since the Prius is rated at 830? ish lbs of passengers + cargo. 5 people at 160lbs each = 800lbs already.
utkan, MG2 is a 10kW motor on the Prius and MG1 is a 50kW motor. If I remember correctly, coasting uses MG2 to regenerate and when you apply the brake, MG1 regenerates, sending more juice in (up to a max of 100amps/20kW)
