TCH mileage

The cruising range for a US TCH is listed by Toyota at 585 miles assuming a combined 34 MPG city/highway. How far have you been able to go (miles) on a single tank.

Define "single tank". Does that mean until the low fuel warning light goes on? When you actually run it out of fuel and mess up your engine?

I'm one of those who typically refuels when I get down to 1/4 tank but have gone lower.

The idea would be to fill up with as much gas as possible and to then run the tank as low as you dare. On another forum I was on there were discussions on how to vent you tank for maximum fillups. My objective here was not to be competitive about it but rather to give owners and potential owners some real life numbers instead of EPA estimates.

I have never gotten my tank all the way. I have had my TCH for about a month now and the most I have put in it is 14.5 gallons which means there was just under 3 gallons left. Had I driven until the tank was dry on each of my fillups I would have made it between 600 and 660 miles. There's no need to run it all the way out to figure this out accurately.

The owners manual specifically tells you NOT to top off the tank. It also tells you NEVER to run the tank dry. Both could cause potential damage to the hybrid system.

With a maximum potential of 17.2 US gallons and an average of 37-38 mpg, you "could" expect up to 650 miles on a fill up. I think most of us will refuel at or just before the 500 mile mark.

I have had my vehicle for 2 1/2 weeks and have managed 742 km and I need gas since the light is on. The system tells me that my tank average is 6.5 litres / 100 km. If that number were true I would be at 1000 km or 625 miles. The computer has consistently measured my distance to empty at 800 km or 500 miles.

By my calculations I am using 8.1 litres /100 km which is somewhat different from the 6.5 that the computer says I'm getting and a far cry from the 5.7 L that the government says I should get.

My Jetta that I traded in had a smaller tank (55 litres) and I consistently got 950 Km on a tank. My Murano went 700 km on 70 litres. So far I am not amused.

I would agree. Below is some of the data I have been tracking since I have gotten my TCH. I usually fill up when the "guessgauge" is around 1\8 or so.

Miles Gal Refueled Price\Gal Cost MPG
428 12.38 $3.229 $36.90 34.57
496 13.465 $3.379 $45.50 36.84
459 12.689 $3.239 $41.10 36.17
555 14.355 $3.379 $48.51 38.66
