Camry HybridDiscussion area for the Toyota Camry Hybrid. Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving Americas favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I searched here and Gen 5&6 sections and found some threads on Silverstar 9005's for HighBeam/DRL conversions (with mixed reviews), but none on the 3457ast for the parking and front turn bulbs. Sylvania doesn't list a Silverstar for the rear turn signal bulb.
My last vehicle had Silverstar turn signals and I always felt that they produced a brighter light to make the turn signals standout more. They also had a blue tint when off but flashed a strong amber. In that regard , has anyone tryed or seen the Silverstar 3457ast installed on a TCH ? The 3457's are running a $10 rebate thru May , so I am considering a set or two...
Also as a newbie , Do the search Police consider this Forum section and the Gen 5/6 section as mutually exclusive ? I would prefer to search/open/respond to the Camry Hybrid Section vs. having to screen the Gen 5/6 threads for info that may or may not fit my TCH application and then reply there or start a new thread here...
Anyway, anyone have thoughts on running Sylvania Silverstar Bulbs in our Camry Hybrids...

After completing my read of the TCH owner's manual , I see why there are no replys. According to the Owner's Manual the only bulbs we can change are the headlights (H11 and 9005), It says to see your Toyota Dealer to change all others (lists maybe seven-as I remember-by location). It does list 3457 as the front parking/turn signal by part number, but says to have your dealership change it ? As time allows I will inspect how the front turn is accessed and go from there...

To access the turn signals in the front, for the left side, turn your wheel to the right, pop the inner fender covers at the front of the left wheel well, ease the inner liner back and access the bulbs from the rear.
Reverse for the right side. It sounds difficult but is really quite simple to do. There are a lot of items that the dealers would like to have you return to them for service that an average owner can do very easily. Have fun, learn and do it yourself.
I've ordered both the Silverstar Ultra 9005 and Silverstar 3457ast twinpacks. I will be replacing both the HighBeam/DRL bulbs and the front amber turns. I'll report back with impressions (and pics) after they arrive and I get them installed...
The 9005SU twinpacks have a mail-in rebate of $10 thru May 08...

Let us know on its performance! I had a set of Silverstars (regular ones) on the Prius... used as DRLs, they burned out < 1 year... both sets (So 4 bulbs) >.<.

Good Thought . On my TCH I can turn off the DRL's on the headlight wand (this also takes the lights out of auto mode if done). Of course this defeats any Safety benefits of DRL's. They are somewhat expensive and a 1 year life span would have to factor into long-term plans . Hopefully the benefits at night on two-lane back roads is enough to offset the hassle of having to replace them every year...
At least when the DRL's change to night low beams they are not burning , but daytime auto use may take a toll. If I'm lucky maybe the Ultra enhancement adds some life expectancy... Anyway I'll write down date installed and let the Forum know ...

Well hopefully it'll work out for you. The Prius uses 9003 bulbs so the low and high beam filaments are in the same bulb. The DRL runs off the low beam at 80% output IIRC. So yeah, they're practically always on hence the short life.
However, you're not going to be using the high beams at night all the time are you? That'll definitely help with the lifespan.
Anyway, yeah let us know. Also let us know how often the bulbs are used. I always get people telling me "my silverstars lasted 4 years" and I always had to remind them that they're not running it as DRLs AND low beams like the Prius does.
