Congrats on the 09, passed on the $1000 rebate did ya

There are lots of thoughts here and on the GH forum. At least you didn't finance the Platinum coverage at closing so that additional cost was not absorbed.

From my decision tree two things came out of the past posts on this topic . First determine your yearly mileage and that can save some money if 6/100k will cover your mileage totals vs. 7/100k. Secondly if you added all the optional packages the additional risk of something needing replacement after 36k increases.

IMHO , If your risk assessment and cashflow are less than the platinum extended warranty cost it should be purchased - just Don't purchase from dealership at their profit loaded prices - buy it from a discount Toyota Dealer (search will help with the phone numbers)...

YES, just call them and have vin# ready or do it all on line. Takes about a week to receive the policy and it is genuine Toyota warrentee. dealers will rip you off. my dealer wanted 1800 for same policy.

Just bought an '09 2 weeks ago and the finance guy wanted to sell me the platinum warranty (7yr/100K) for their "cost" which was $1,800. Of course I refused. I'll call Lexus of Greenwich, I work 1 mile away!!!

You can wait until a couple months befroe the 3/36 runs out. As far as GAP insurance goes if the car is leased or financed it may not be bad idea but Mine are always paid for and I take the risk myself.

In my case , I added GAP thru my Credit Union as they were $500 cheaper for same coverage than Dealership (heard that tune before). GAP pays for itself if you TOTAL your car , otherwise it won't be useful...

I didn't get GAP insurance as my coverage with Allstate includes new car replacemment if it is totaled within three years. It costs something like $11 per 6 months for the coverage instead of $11-12 per MONTH added to the car payment!

After three years, the gap should be reasonable, so there was no need to pay any extra for it.

According to a recent report in Consumer Reports, an extended warranty is NOT worth paying for. Only about 30% of those surveyed said that they would have paid as much or more for repairs than the cost of the warranty. Remember that the Hybrid system is covered for 8 years/100k miles from Toyota and then factor in how much a small malfunction will cost to repair before investing even $900 in a warranty. After all, the cost is designed to make a profit, so they're not actually giving you anything.
Of course, YMMV and you MAY be the pne who made a good investment with a problem car, but let's face it, most serious problems will appear within the first three years anyway!

Very true, it may never pay for itself but they are having a lot of problems with nav screens for instance, especially Lexus which use the same screen and when they crack from cold weather they scream abuse and know of a few that have been rejected at a cost of $7100. Case is they have found a way not to pay either way it seems. Toyo motors is going downhill with customer service on all its lines period. Look at the 8 year 100K warrentee on the hybrid system and see what actually is and is not covered, you will be surprised.

Extended plans for Warranty were a recent topic in the 2008 Consumers Reports. I suggest you go to their web site and check it out. Very englightening.

Now here is my experience with them...

Car = 1999 Chrysler 300M (1999 Car of the Year Motortrend). I purchased a 5yr/75Kmile extended warranty and never once used it. I lost that bet.

Car = 2004 Chrysler Crossfire Again I purchased a 4 YR/60K mile extended warranty and it has just expired. Again I lost that bet having never used it.

So, when you take out an extended warranty, there are two major things you should be aware of....

1) you are betting that there WILL BE PROBLEMS in such a large dollar amount that it will pay for the extended warranty plan.

2) You are betting that the insurance company (in nearly 100% of the plans this is NOT the auto manufacturer) will be solvent and in business when you place a claim.

So for my new Camry Hybrid, I have chosen to not go the warranty route. We plan on turning in the car after 3.5 years. Our dealership adds to the Toyota standard warranty by 6 months and 8K miles.

I suspect that by 2011 there will be some newer technology in the Hybrid class of cars that will be worth considering.

Just my 2 cents...
Cheers
Art

I have not yet decided on the extended warranty for my TCH yet, but I DID get one last week (at 25k miles) for my '07 Sienna Limited. I paid $740 for a 6 yr/100k Platinum from Bernardi Toyota because there are so many things to go wrong on this van (i.e. power doors, power rear seat, NAV etc.) that I felt it was worth the gamble.
An extended warranty is basically like any insurance policy...you have it if you need it but realize you may not use it. Only in hindsight can you say if it was worth it or not.
On the TCH, I may decide to replace it in 3-4 years anyway, so it would not be worth it except to a potential buyer if it was transferable.
