What to do re: small TCH trunk?

We are shopping for a new TCH, but I am alarmed at how small the trunk is. We don't travel a lot, but we take 4-5 driving trips a year. Has anyone found a practical solution to additional cargo carrying for trips?

You could always get roof racks and put the cargo in add-on bins attached to the roof.

Yea I can see the trunk being a problem with four people on a road trip. IMO if the TCH is your choice then a Rental car for the Road trips may be a solution , otherwise check out the Prius or Highlander Hybrids...

The two solutions I see available are either a roof rack system, as previously suggested, or install a trailer hitch and use a hitch mounted luggage carrier.

The roof rack will definitely hit your MPGs but it is only on for a short time. The hitch mounted luggage carrier is the preferable solution to me as you do not risk banging up your paint...

There are several hitch options listed on E-Bay and other websites or do a local yellow pages search on hitches...

Before anyone chimes in on it the TCH is not rated to tow in any capacity. I am not suggesting towing a trailer, although some people here do so, but using a hitch mounted luggage carrier.

See this link for a previous discussion on cargo carrying:

Lack of Cargo Space in TCH

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the advice. Do you use a hitch carrier?

I will be using one on vacation this summer .... Right now everything fits in the trunk...

The TCH only has 900 pounds of load capacity, that includes passengers and cargo, so watch your total weight no matter what you decide to do...

Personally, I would go with a Thule roof mounted carrier which is reasonably aerodynamic and weathertight and lockable.
You can put some of the paint protection film under the pads on the roof mount supports to protect the paint.

The other great aspect to a hitch is you can haul your bikes with it, once you have the right carrier.
