I will be picking up my '09 TCH this Saturday (in Calgary, Ab.). 'B' Package (moonroof, etc.) with the 5 year, 160,000 km extended warranty (we put alot of kms on our vehicles - highway). With everything the price is $35207.58. Ordered it on May 12th, with anticipated delivery on May 27th (so it's early!). Very excited about it! With a family, I was looking at the Escape Hybrid for awhile, but we have bought Toyotas and a Subaru in the past with no reliability concerns, so it was a natural choice. + the L/100km were much better on the TCH than the FEH.
Wondering if there are any Canadian-only threads out there? I've read this and other forums (greenhybrid, edmunds, etc.) and have found the canadian content on this site most informative. No offense to the US posts, as alot of your info. is extremely helpful. It's good to read about the unique weather 'constraints' up here in the cold north, however...+ I learned metric from a wee age back in Toronto...
I just got my b package in BC where everything is priced fixed, the price on the internet is what you pay.
Where did you get your 72/160,000 warranty and what was the price, this was the only thing which I did not get.
Took it to vegas and back averaged 42-46 mpg going down there and 52 coming back, and for a stretch of 120 miles at exactly 55 mph I averaged 3.3l/100km which is just about 80 mpg, not bad but the road was flat and smooth, the weather was warm and I might have had a small wind from the back of the car pushing me.
I bought the TCH at the same price I have seen online ($30,660.00 b/4 taxes, freight, etc.) - the dealer told me there are no discounts on the '09 because of the overall price decrease and features like the moonroof, etc. thrown into the 'B' (now base) model. No federal rebate on the '09, also, as I have read about this numerous times and as was confirmed by my dealer. I did save about $230 on the block heater, however (dealership pricing error - they gave it to me b/c it was in the original quote).
The 72 month/160,000km (= 32,000km/year) extended warranty is offered through the ECP at the dealership - I think it's on the back of the pamphlet. I paid about $1800.00 for that 'peace of mind'. As I have written before, we put on alot of km/year, and with dealership hourly rate of about $115/hour to repair a hybrid, this was a good investment, I feel. Comes with 4 free oil changes and 1 free tire rotation (+ tire coverage, etc.).
ohh wait.. "B" is the base?? What happened to "A"?? Then what's the Premium Package with navigation called? "C"?
Hi! Thanks for the priuschat info. - I'll definitely look into your site!
Toyota (Canada?) dropped the 'A' package, so the 'B' package became the base (but they threw in the moonroof, rear seat lights, and dimming rearview mirror, etc. into the deal). The 'C'/premium package adds leather heated seats, Nav., and front passenger seat controls for another $5000.00 (only 2 trims available now - 'B' or 'C'). I personally didn't think it was worth it...I also made a mistake with my warranty info. - it should read 60 months and 160,000km.
Having only driven the TCH for 2 days, in the cold rain (about 4-8 degrees Celsius), my tank average so far is 6.5L/100km/36 mpg (over 350 km driven - tank still over half)! I've noticed that you can drive in EV mode up to almost 70 km/h before the ICE kicks in - the car is amazing, to say the least (and more comfortable than any other car I've owned)...
In terms of the 1600km 'break in' period - the manual says not to drive the car in 'low gear continuously' - what exactly does that mean? EV mode?
Congrats to another fellow Canadian Hybrid owner. I've had my 09 TCH since the beginning of April. Only on my 4th tank of gas so far. Nice, especially since gas just hit $1.36 a litre in Vancouver. That's $5.15 a gallon!
B package for me too, I couldn't justify the added cost for a NAV system that is apparently not all that great. I use a portable Magellan mounted to the far left of my windshield just beside the A pillar, . A perfect fit. No extended warranty for me, yet. I'm still keeping my eye out for a deal like what our fellow americans are getting. Less than $1000.

Fortunately this is not necessarily true. I walked out of the dealership at 5% over dealer cost. $32,000 all taxes, levies and else included. With my CarcostCanada report, they didn't know what to do.

I'm averaging about 6.1L per 100, so far as low as 5.9. Regular driving, lots of hills, I do live in BC, and I tend to practice the "Pulse and Glide" technique when I'm not annoying anyone behind me. The rest of the time I just enjoy sitting at a light not wasting any gas idling.

What the manual is talking about is the "B" mode on your gearshift. It's essentially a low gear engine brake that allows you to go down hills without braking so much. The only downfall is the the ICE has to be on to work. I prefer it when the ICE turns off and I coast down hills to save fuel. Once again, BC, lots of hills. Just baby the driving until the engine is broken in, no brake stands !

It's not my site. I'm just a mod on that site .
Ahh okok.. so that's how Toyota differentiates them internally btwn the standard and the newly revised and better priced 09 version.
6.5L/100km? daaamn... I wish i could've afforded a TCH. my smart got 5.74L/100km on its second tank (i.e. not the dealer tank)
It just means "B" mode. You don't wanna put load on the engine and "B" mode is basically engine braking which puts a load on the engine.

Well things couldn't be better (sun is shining, and the temp. today is supposed to be 20 C)! Still on the dealer's tank of gas, and now the tank average is sitting at 6.0L/100km (39.2mpg) with about 2/5 of a tank left (just under 600 km so far on the ODO)!
Still babying it for the 'break in' period, but I have a couple of questions:
Is it better to accelerate quickly off the line (ICE mostly) in traffic which 'demands' it, get up to about 60 km/h,then let off the accelerator for a millisecond and go into EV mode? Or is gentle acceleration the way to go for better FE (with the ICE running and traffic making it almost impossible to get up to speed in EV only)? Sometimes when a pickup or SUV is on my tail I have to punch it a bit so I don't piss anyone off...
I have read many threads about this, and, for me, the jury is still out...I appreciate your opinions...

Myself, I've tried driving all sorts of ways, to see what gives the best mileage and at the end of the tank I pretty much end up with the same mileage. 6.0 - 6.1. The difference is negligible really. I'm starting to just drive what's comfortable for myself and the passengers.
Would you let me know of the dealer in the Vancouver area that you were dealing with? I'd like to get a similar vehicle and think those dealers that negotiate should be rewarded with more business.

Hi Paul,
I purchased mine from Valley Toyota in Chilliwack. Jesse was my salesman. Nice, sincere. I've heard that Lower Mainland dealerships use "Toyota Pricing" but that doesn't seem to hold water out in the Valley. They even have a referral program that if you refer someone and they buy a car you get $100 cash.

The former. Accelerate "Briskly" (I realise that's open to interpretation but use your best judgement) and then feather it into glide mode (not EV mode.. EV means you're still using the battery to power the vehicle).

I too did not paid full MSRP on the Totoya Canada website. The dealer in Toronto ordered one for us and we paid $32,200 on the road. They even gave us winter floor mats. When TCH just came out, I can understand why people pay full price, but these day you can negotiate the price just like any other cars. Waiting time was 2 weeks.
PM me for the salesperson and dealer. I am not sure I am allowed to post it here. If a dealer wants full price for TCH, just go somewhere else, don't waste your time.
