Toyota says change oil every 5000 miles on the Camry hybrid. Does any body know how to find what percentage of driving is with the hybrid battery and what with the engine. Also do we really have to use syn. oil. I change every 5 or 6 weeks. Thanks PM
Most decent dino oil will go 7500 miles with some still having a good tbn at the 8,000 to 10,000 mile mark. For the synthetics, they are safe to run from 7500 miles to 15,000 miles and beyond. Is synthetic an overkill at 5000 mile oci? Yes, but I still prefer the advantages that they provide.
Try doing some research at bitog. They have some VERY anal guys when it comes to motor oil with a good bit of research behind them. You can visit with them at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com
Allow me to qualify my "BS" answer with information that my new car dealer passed on to me.
One: Toyota does not recommend Syn in a Hybrid. (I was told that this past weekend when I went in for our 1st oil change)
Two: That (My Toyota Dealer told me almost all new car dealer will tell you this) “Rule of Thumb - 3000 miles, dino oil. 6000 miles, syn. oil.
When you get your oil changed, notice the windshield sticker and what it says as to when you should next get your oil changed and what the next mileage is? I’ll just about bet it is about 3000miles and (or) three months.
Since I started using Syn in all of my Cars several years ago I have been dong the 6000 mile thing. At that time (6000k) I get the tires rotated also. Its easier to do it all at once and remember that way.
Is this "BS" or a marketing ploy? I can't answer that.
The manufacturer's recommendation is every 5,000 miles, and yes my dealer puts 5,000 miles on the window sticker. The "rule of thumb" was for older cars and is not applicable to this car.

I would like to reward you for informing me of this. I always knew Toyota was wrong about the 5000 mile oil changes. Please provide your SSN, bank account and routing number for me to wire the money.
TN automatically censors out the numbers so only you and I can see it. Check it out: SSN xxx-xx-xxxx BANK xxxxxxxxxx ROUTE xxxxxxxx

Probably,
Mike
You are indeed Gullible!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You sound like Hussein Obama - Inexperienced and will believe whatever his ignorant handlers tell him.....
One: I was told Toyota does not recommend Synthetic Oil in a Hybrid:
Read your manual, read TSB TR-0063-W, hell it's probably on your oil cap!!! - 0W20is synthetic.
Two: My Toyota Dealer told me:
Read your Owners Maintenance Guide - One idiot does not overide Toyota Motors recommendation!!!!!!!
So you believe a window sticker that was printed by an oil change company. Get out of the last century!!!!!!!
I could care less what you personally do. If you continue that you will have no engine warranty coverage.
I can answer your question...........
Your initial posting was BS and your explanations for the posting are also BS.
My DEALER changes my oil in the TCH every 3,000 miles with syn oil for FREE~! Yes, FREE!
I do not think one has to be nasty when posting. It is quite indicative of McCain supprters however.
Thank You!

That's what my dealer does...5,000-mile incriments. That and the info center in my TCH warned me at 5,000. I'm guessing Toyota is responsible for that one.

I got my first oil change free of charge in an effort to earn my future business (I went to different dealership than the one where I purchased my TCH). Do you have a maintenance plan? The dealership from which I bought my TCH tried to sell me one for like $2,500. All maintenance would have been "free".
Sorry about the late response but I have been on a business trip and did not have the time to get on the site.
You need to understand that the dealerships make their money in the service bays, not in the showroom. If they can BS you into changing the oil at 3,000 instead of 5,000 miles, they can help the company’s bottom line by a good percentage.
All readily available 0w-20 oil in the US is synthetic. 5w-20 can be had in synthetic and dino versions. Either one will work in the TCH.
The funny thing about all of this is when using euro spec oil, most of the SAME cars sold here, often have oil change intervals of 12,000 to 15,000 miles in Europe. These change intervals are possible due to the stricter specs governing their oils compared to ours.

Definitely. Think about how much oil they import compared to us, but even moreso how much revenue U.S. oil companies stand to forego by pushing recos up to those levels.
I've heard of folks using 0W-20 or 30 for this very reason...to extend the change interval. Heck, I've read a bunch of articles that have shown 0W oil to be responsible for at least a few more MPGs.
How about a list of the "bunch" of articles.............
While 0W20 may give a slight increase (0.1 mpg) over 5W20, it is nowhere near "a few more MPGs"..................
and that sure doesn't break even with the $12-20 extra cost for an oil change every 5,000 miles.
[1] If you know how to use Google... (here's the first result for your reading pleasure, although it's an AMSOIL test...so it's probably more like an ad).
[2] Um..."a few more MPGs" could apply to a rusty, old pickup truck that gets 12 MPG and now gets 15 MPG. And save your breath about "...oh well a rusty old pickup can't use 0W30...". The benefits differ across the board. So, your "slight increase" claim isn't accurate either. The point is I'm speaking in general terms.
[3] When using synthetics, 3,000-5,000 change intervals aren't necessary.
ALL THAT SAID...in my TCH, I:
- change my oil every 5,000 miles like my owner's manual suggests.
- use the oil recommended by the manufacturer.
