What the beeeeeeeeeep?

I just picked up my TCH '09 yesterday. Gotta love those butt warmers on a chilly morning....

I have one quick question about keyless entry.

When I walk up to the car (key fob in pocket), and pull the handle to open the door (while pushing the little button) the door unlocks but as soon as it opens the car emits a high pitch squeal until I get in and close the door. What in the heck is up with that?

There's no need to push the little button on the door handle when you are trying to open the door. The button is there to lock the door.

To unlock the door when you walk up to the car, all you need to do is just touch the door handle (of course have the fob with you)

It will make that high pitch noise when you try locking the door but you have the fob inside the car.

Stop pushing the button. You are opening and locking the door at the same time. Try just pulling the handle.
I did the same thing at first.

Doh!

So the alarm is: Yo, dummy! You have locked the door but it's still open.

I should have figured that one out. My Sienna makes the same sound if I lock it with a door still open.

New cars, ain't they a blast....

Thanks all.

If it's any consolation, I was doing the same thing the first day I had my '09 TCH. Took me awhile to figure out what a STOOPID maneuver it was.

The whole keyless entry/starting thing requires a new mindset. Heck, I still have trouble "timing" the foot-on-the-brake to start the system bit. I must be pushing the button a split second too soon before touching the brake pedal, because I often have to go thru the procedure twice.

What's strange is that in my '08 400h, you don't need to have your foot on the brake to start the system at all. Just turn the key - even if you're standing outside the vehicle - and you'll get the "READY" light. Reminds me of the good ol' days before all these reDUMBdant safety systems....

I agree with Bob, especially as to timing. My twist on it: for whatever reason, the Prius will give you a ready light almost instantly, or at least slightly more quickly than the TCH will, for whatever reason. As a result, I find that even two months into my TCH experience, I've often put the car in "drive" before the "ready" light appeared, requiring that I re-do the start sequence. That never happened with the Prius.

These cars (the HSD vehicles) do have some funky new procedures you have to learn. Once you've got them down, no problems. I'm still working on pausing before putting the TCH in gear...

Hi

I just found this site. I have an 08 Camry Hybrid. I always wear my seat belt, but the annoying chime from the seat belt warning chime bugs me. Is there any way to disconnect it?

Thanks, looking forward to this board.

Hugh,

You can have the dealer disable the alarm on your next visit. There will be a charge for that service at most dealerships and some will try to BS you by saying "it's the law" and that you can't change it.

Hugh, I'll assume you have set something on the front passenger seat. The easy and safe thing to do is change your habit. Remove what ever is on the seat and put it on the deck, behind the front seats or in the trunk (boot) and not on the seat!

The chime and light are a safety warning telling you that there is weight on the seat and the belt is not buckled. Disabling the warning system is ill advised as it is very likely that an adult/kid could be using the seat and NOT connect their belt and be maimed or killed by the air bag deploying in an accident. And it can and does happen!!!

FWIW, the light/chime system is not designed well IMHO. The light/chime annunciator should come on when the system is unsafe and go out when its safe. The chime goes off when the belt is buckled and there is weight on the seat leaving the annoying orange/red light on. A pee -poor design. The light should go out or change to green indicating a safe operating condition. (And, yes, the light is designed to tell you that its recognizing an adult and not a light weight in the seat when its on and that the system is armed for full power deployment. Worthless info, IMHO.... no one cares what level of power the AB is going to deploy at. Does the two stage AB in the steering wheel have this kind of annunciator? No! Would you care if it did? Most likely not!

Who ever designed this thing needs a remedial course in safety systems. At the risk of being snarky.... its probably the same design team that put together the near worthless TPMS annunciator in my '04 Sienna and in the TCH. They're practically worthless in broad daylight due to their small size, orange color and single 'elevator' bing warning.

This probably one of the very few faults I've found in an otherwise well designed vehicle.

Oh no! FEAR, UNCERTAINTY, DEATH!!!

You know, if you don't constantly honk your horn whenever you drive a small child could not hear your car coming, run out in front of you and be KILLED!!! I think it's negligent of Toyota not to lock the horn ON at all times the car is in motion. That would certainly improve safety.

Not just weight on the seat ...

I had my dealer disable the chime on the passenger seat. What surprised me though is when I was carrying a long load with the passenger seat fully reclined but with some of the weight on the seat back, the 'no seatbelt' light was flashing away. If I lifted the parcel, the light would go out.

To the OP, do you have something attached to the seat back that could be triggering the light&chime?
