Camry HybridDiscussion area for the Toyota Camry Hybrid. Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving Americas favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've seen some of you describe these things as "Blue Halos of Economy" in another thread. But I seem to have trouble gauging (pardon the pun) exactly when these darn things come on. From what I've read, it's representative of your active fuel economy. I've tried punching it to turn them off, but nothing happens.
Are they directly linked to the fuel efficiency meter on the info screen?
Side note: I can't resist saying "Excellent" in a Mr. Burns accent when I've attained the blinking "EXCELLENT!" sign on my info screen in the mornings.
Like cdn_tch said, every "step" in your MFD will brighten the "halo" araound your gauges. You will not have any light untill you reach 25 mpg. From there, it will step up the brightness at 30 mpg and again at 35 mpg.
Ok...that makes sense...related to the fuel efficiency meter in the info center. I should have watched it this morning again. I did get another "EXCELLENT!" as usual.
It's easy to monitor the halos thus leaving the small Multi-info dispaly free to display something else. You almost always get excellent. The TCH's mpg range is small. Doesn't your FE meter stop at 60mpg or something? and the Eco Drive Meter stop at 40?

This is what the thing looks like when you've been doing well. The mpg gauge does indeed top out at 60. Alas, the open door warning has popped up over the stairstep. The original purpose of this pic was to show the Scangauge I've just installed atop the steering column. Don't need no silly halos now...

Niiice. Yeah but the halos are good for a quick glance. hehe.. the scangauge says LP... which I assume is left passenger.
Despite driving the TCH many times, I still can't figure out how to glide... I always have to cheat and shift to N.
Yeah, it would be especially cool if the SG-IIx offered something akin to "LP eject" (like 007, left passenger eject...). Alas, "LP" is nothing so interesting -- it's just a readout for whether the ICE is in closed loop or open loop operation. Interestingly, at least to me, the 2AZ-FE goes open loop more than I'd expect it to. It's clearly not just at WOT, but it seems instead to happen frequently once you go above about 5k rpms.
This implies one of the other "problems" with the TCH. It's enough of a compromise hybrid design (it can do 0-60 in only 7.3 seconds) that I often find myself tempted (and give in to the temptation) to exploit the performance characteristics. Dang -- I'm a weak minded fool -- I just can't pass on the torque blast this car provides -- even if I'm losing 3-5 mpgs per tank for my foolishness...

hahaha I do the same on the smart. I know I have to drive fuel efficiently to save money but I'm so tempted to give a little burst (no pun intended =P) every now and then cause it's so darn fun to drive.
