After coming to a stop, I hold light pressure on the brake to keep the car from moving forward. Occasionally I've noticed that the "monitor thingie" is showing an arrow from the battery to the 'wheel.' Apparently its indicating that the motor generators are being energized. Pressing harder on the brake makes the arrow disappear.
I think this is somewhat like putting your foot on the gas and holding the brake on in a conventional car.....
Must I hold a heavy pressure on the brake to avoid burning something out?? Obviously I'm using current out of the battery when its working like this.
Or, is it OkeyDokey to hold just enough brake pressure to keep the car from moving forward???
Should I put it in neutral? Yes, I know the battery won't charge in "N"....
Same thing with an automatic.... the engine is still trying to move the car forward but there's nothing to tell you that the engine is powering the wheels.
It's the same for all Toyota hybrids. Firm on the brakes!

Thanks, Tim & Tideland
Do either of you suppose that its a big problem to not be firm on the brakes?? It is sort of like an automatic in Drive. Even then, I don't put heavy pressure to hold the car... just enough, only.
No but why put unnecessary stress on the system right? My dad does that and all I can see is that the battery loses charge slowly (depending on the light, he can go from 6 bars to 5). To me, that's a waste of charge cause that can be used for actual propulsion of the vehicle.

As an owner of both the Prius and the TCH, I'm with Tideland on this (if not his car color selection ). Depress the brake hard enough to eliminate the draw on the traction battery. There's no reason at all to allow the thing to discharge, unless it's either for propulsion or AC power. Other than that, it's a waste of power.

I tried your break test and found mine is the same. I never have the consumption screen on so this was a surprise. Thanks for posting. Surprising how firm you need to hold at a stop.
Yesterday, I noticed that you can have both the ICE and MGs engaged with only a light touch on the brake. Pressing harder on the brake shuts down both.
Honestly, having to hold hard pressure on the brake is a pain.
I'm thinking of shifting to "N" while stopped at a light.
Uh-oh. Please look carefully at the title of your thread. Yes, indeed, THC does have a lot of quirks -- including the notable ability to cause one to fail drug tests. I do find the TCH to be intoxicating as well, but in a much more legal and socially acceptable way. . .

Legal and drug free! I guess that "Excellent" econ rating and seeing 38+ mpg on the clock accounts for that giddy feeling every time you drive it. And here I was thinking it was the 'new car' smell!!!!
Really? I've had the engine running in N but nothing showing on the MFD. Now I don't have a scangauge to see if the battery is charging but my screen shows no arrows with the engine running in N.
Edit: Also if you're in N and the engine is off and the battery drains to two bars, it will not charge. I have had it drop to one bar before while waiting at the border cause there's a slight downhill at one point so to conserve battery, I leave it in N and let it roll down rather than in D and having the battery power the car.
