USA Check Engine Light

I need some advise on how to get rid of the Check Engine light.

It all started on Wednesday when I went to got Gas In NJ and the attendee did not secure my gas cap on all the way. I re-secured the gas cap and the light is Still On. Does this mean I have other issues with my car or should I pay the dealership to rip me a new one on the next maintanance visit ( 45k mile maint cost $600.00). Or does any one know of a cheaper dealerships I can go to that wont charge me an arm and a leg?

Thank you.

Before you go spend unnecessary money, you should disconnect your battery for 20 -30 min. reconnect it. That will reset everything. Then go drive around as you usually would and if it comes back on then try something else.

If it is just a gas cap issue, just wait 5-10 driving cycles and it will clear on its own.

Smile Gas Cap Woes....

Deadman,

IME, not with the TCH, the MIL light will reset after several start cycles. A cycle means the car is started from coldand gets fully warmed up and drives several miles ... at least on my VW.

And, he asks!! Why does NJ still have this ****-a-Mamie gas jockey law?? Similar to Oregon's cocked up rule. I'm surprised the citizens of the Garden State haven't gotten that tossed nonsense in the bin.

Maybe a call to the gas station to tell them that the MIL light is on because they didn't tighten the cap?? You're not a 'car person' and you paid the dealer $XXX to fix the problem and to whom should you send the bill???

Cheers!
