Steering Rack TSB

Quote:
90A 2007-2008 Camry and Highlander Hybrid. Specific vehicles will require the replacement of the electronic steering rack. Symptom is an increase in effort to steer the vehicle at slow speeds. This repair is expected to require 5 hours of working time. There is no rental allowance for the campaign
I just saw this release from Toyota for "campaign 90A". My steering rack seems to be fine but I'm wondering if I should get the new one put in.

Is the new rack a better design?

I'm almost out of warranty and I'm wondering if Toyota will repair this for free later if it goes out later.

This is a campaign (recall)... not a TSB

This is a campaign (recall) 90A for JAPANESE-built (first letter of vin is a J) Camry Hybrids. If yours was built in Kentucky, this campaign does NOT apply to your vehicle. If in doubt, have your Toyota dealer run your vin number and they can verify whether or not your vehicle applies to this campaign (recall). If it applies to your vehicle, have it done before steering failure occurs.

My '08 HiHy is in the shop right now for this. Several weeks ago, at startup, the power steering failed and an error message popped up to have it serviced immediately. I shut the car off, looked under the hood, cursed, closed the hood, and restarted the car and it went away.

I told the dealer about it at the 15 k check, and they ordered parts. I dropped it off Thursday morning, they got into it and needed more parts, and Friday afternoon still hadn't gotten it all buttoned up and working again. Some computer issue with the vehicle.

Hopefully I'll get it back tomorrow, and the interior won't be beat all to heck. After driving a rental Yaris for 4 days, I'm anxious to get my HiHy back!
