I'm in a market for used car and the TCH is on the top of my list right now. I like it because it's in the same size class as my current car ('92 Honda Accord), and it has a lot of gadgets (heated seats, nav...etc) which I'm a sucker for. I also like the reliability people have experineced with their TCH and love the fuel efficiency. I plan to drive this car into the ground so over the lifetime of the car I'd expect the fuel savings to be significant.
So what tips do all you experienced TCH owners have for a potential buyer? I'm thinking about a used '08 or '09 but could be swayed to buy older or newer if there are good reasons to.
Are there any known 'issues' I should watch out for? How important is low milage? Are extended warranties worth it?
Any tips or facts a new buyer should be aware of would be appreciated.
If my neck of the woods is anything to go by, buy a new '09 for about 3-4K more than the 07 & 08s are running right now. I'm amazed that the local dealers are asking 27K for an '08, when you could walk in and offer them 30-31 for an '09. And last month you had a 2K rebate on top of that.
For the TCH in Canada take MSRP and subtract ~9% to get dealer invoice, give the dealer 500-700 profit, add your local taxes (PST + GST), give the dealer that number with a take it or I'm leaving statement and drive away with a new car.
Thanks for those tips. What $2k are you referring to? Is it the Red Tag sale they're having?
$2,000 manufacture to dealer incentive for people who pay cash or get their own financing. Like Red tag sale, it has been extended to May 20th, 2009.
Whether you have cash to buy this car or not, it still make sense to buy new 2009 then a used 2008 because of the 0.9% Toyota financing rate for the 2009 TCH.
If you have cash, you can get a brand new 09 TCH for $30,200 on the road after EcoRebate from the government.
PM me if you want the 2009 or 2010 exact dealer invoice. Can I post it here? Give them $700 over invoice like CND_TCH have suggested and they are more than happy to sell you the car.

PM on it's way! Thx.
Is this the EcoRebate program you guy's are referring to?
I just picked up an '07 TCH w/ 50,000 kms for $22,000. I bought into an additional warranty coverage of 6yrs/120K and all in, it came to about $27K on the road.
Been driving it for a week now and definitely getting much better fuel economy over my Acura TL
Not to be picky but a '92 Accord is actually a compact. The Accord was upgraded to midsize for the 1998 model year. But I know what you mean.
I also agree with the others in getting a 2009. It's when Toyota lowered the price (because of the parity with the US dollar) and now you get a choice of $2,000 (cash back) or 0.9% financing with Toyota Financial Services.

I just came back from the dealer, they're having a 3 day sale they no longer have the non-nav version. I was offered a new 09 leather/nav TCH for $32,500 before freight,ac,tax...etc. On top of that I should get the $2k PST Provincial rebate plus I'll be arranging my own financing so I'll get a further $2000 cash discount...so what do ya'll think

To be honest I was going just by the pictures, today was the first time I got in a TCH. I've got to admit it certainly feels bigger than my old Accord. Lots of space for the passengers, the only thing that is clearly smaller is the trunk space. I'll just have to accept that.

I think it's a good deal if that's the car you want to buy. Do you really want all those options like leather and navigation? All the dealers I visit all have the leather and navigation TCH left. I guess they all want to get rid of them.

Not bad, I don't have the invoice for one with nav but I'd guess the dealer is pocketting 7-900ish on the car.
To save yourself some grief when going through the final paperwork, go back to your sales person and offer them 36,000 OTD (Out the door). That includes the $2000 discount, the Toyota fees and PST & GST. The provincial rebate (if any) is over and above that.
The OTD pricing prevents them from adding silly fees to a price that you thought was final.
Phone the sales person and tell them you want the car for the OTD price and you'll put down a deposit on your CC, and get a certified cheque for the ballance the next day. Set a time for pickup, and be there on time to do a walk around, sign the papers and off you go.
If you want to try, you could offer a few hundred less on your OTD price and see if it goes. But don't go over the 36K.
tinv, I know it's mostly just eye candy but I love the nav system so yes it's what I'm looking for.
Cdn_tch, we're getting really close to making a decision and I'll use the aproach you've suggested.
I'm now looking at the dealer installed options. I'm thinking about asking them to throw in the Park Pilot. I don't think it's worth $600 but I'll ask them to throw it in.
How you deal is up to you, but I would not try for a $600 option (the original supplier charges U$300 for the sensor kit alone) for free when their margin is getting close to that number. Don't forget that the profit on the cars keeps the doors open and the sales people paid.
