Still would like to know how to set up the ScangaugeII for the TCH. I had one set up for the VW TDI Beetle I just sold and would like to use it in the hybrid, but the only settings I see in the owner's manual are for the Prius and those don't work on the Camry.
If anyone has set one up for their Camry Hybrid, I would love the settings.
The gauges that I put up are RPM, TPS, current consumption, trip average consumption.
TPS is what will help you get better milage as you try to minimize that number.
The RPM is useful over longer streches where you can use it to get the TCH in to heretical mode (both arrows going to the wheel in the MFD, and milage goes way up 60-80mpg)
Thanks, I will set it up that way. And thanks for the details. Now we just have to hope the xgauge settings will get published soon.
I'm confused, I know this is a neat tool or toy or whatever. Actually it is very clever with all the information you get from it but really, what is the practical point of getting one of these? I hear some say it will help with gas mileage but for the life of me I don't understand how. From what I can see the only thing that the advantage the average TCH owner would get is the tachometer function. I can't be the only one out there that doesn't understand this. Anyone care to fill the rest of us in? Thanks, Rick
You're right it is a neat toy, and unless you are a serious hypermiler it will give you limited functionality.
There are a couple of items that can help with mileage.
The TPS setting shows how hard you are on the gas pedal, and by minimizing that number you can improve your fuel economy.
The RPM is useful in longer stretches. If you are in steady speed state at ~55mph and lower, eventually your RPM goes down to 1280, if you hold it there for a 1/2 mile or so and then very light add gas you can get the traction motor to kick in, in addition to the ICE. The ICE then eases up and you go into 'heretical mode' and your MPG can go as high as 90 MPG at slower speeds, ~60MPG at the 50-55 MPH.

Thanks for the information. I do want to get the best mileage I can. I've read some of the stuff on hypermilers I have tried to get the car to enter that "heretical mode" you wrote of, but as yet haven't been able to do so. I've only had the car a week, so maybe I still need a little more time. I could see where it would be helpful to have the tachometer but now that I think about it, watching the TPS setting on a scangauge would probably help a lot. What do you think? Rick

The TCH will get better and better mileage until about 5000 miles where the mileage will plateau. In the mean time you will learn what works and what doesn't work based on where you drive (topography, traffic and your own driving style).
The TCH really rewards drivers with a good feel for what the car is doing and reacting to it. My wife drives it like a regular car and the mileage difference between us is very noticable.
TPS will only help if you and your driving environment let it. Since you are new to the TCH, I'd recommend taking a few months to let the ICE break in and for you to get a feel for how it does its magic. Then start exploiting the quirks of the programming to maximize mileage.
