Rear Brakes Moan When Slowly Reversing

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had this issue of when you slowly reverse out of a parking space for example then gently press the brakes to stop, the rear brakes moan/squeek quite a bit? They sound like a sick seal! This happens mainly when the brakes and discs are cold but also happens when at operating temperature.

I'm going to take my 2007 TCH into the garage for my mechanic to take a look but I'm suspecting this is not a brake pad wear issue since it only happens when slowly stopping from a reverse procedure. I'm not hearing your typical wear-tab screaching noise of when it's time to replace the brake pads. This is a different noise all together.

Thanks.

I just started experiencing the same noise about two months ago but it has gotten louder now. My car is a 2007 hybrid and I search online and All I could come up with was a service bulletin BR008-06 that states to install support plates but mine already has them per my toyota dealer. At this point I'm pissed because it very load but only in reverse and all my neighbors just look at me funny when coming out of my garage. At this point I'm looking for suggestion to see if somebody has fix this before. The brake pads are fine per my dealer, I only have 33K miles on my car. Can anybody help? Thanks.

My 2008 does it every once in a while, particularly the first thing in the AM. The pads on mine haven't worn past the chamfer, and the rotors are nice and smooth. Since the car stops well, and there's no indication of other than the occasional noise, I'm not going to worry to much about it...

My 07 TCH does the same thing in reverse only, I noticed the rear disc look like they had rusted at one time and maybe that was why they were noisy. I was hoping with more use the noise would go away but now it sounds like it may be a problem with the TCH. BTW, I just looked up the service bulletin mentioned above and it talks about the front pad squeak not the rear. The sound I have is not a squeak, more of a deeper sound.

Glad I'm not the only one experiencing this. I haven't taken my TCH into a shop to get my brake pads and rotors checked but from my visual inspection, I've got plenty of pads left and the wear bars are not the culprit for the strange noise.

Like I mentioned in my first post, the noise sounds like a sick seal or a heavy, wood dining room table chair being pushed across a hardwood floor. Yes, I stand corrected onthemove, it's a deeper sound than a squeak for sure.

My neighbors turn their heads in my direction too when I'm backing out of the driveway. I notice it happens most when the brakes are cold but also when warm too. Very strange.

yeah, don't worry. mine does same. look at your rear rotors. aren't they really glazed? remove glaze, moan will go away. de-glaze rear brake pads same time. i know, have done this maybe 2 mths ago.

I'm also experiencing the same issue. I have a 07 TCH with 57,xxx miles. I took it to the dealer but it didn't squeak there, I'm sure theres plenty of other people complained about the same issue to the dealer. I talked to a guy at Firestone which also has the same issue with a toyota truck. My car only squeals when I first turn it on for the day wether its AM or PM. I video recorded the brake squeal on my phone and will go back to the dealer and show it to them.

Our two TCHs (07 and 09) have always done this a little, especially backing up first thing in the morning. Brakes are fine. Stopped worrying about it long ago.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. I'll probably have my rear rotors deglazed soon and that will take care of it.

Take care.

was - finally - washing my camry today, and picked through the rear wheel spokes at them rotors.
they go back to glazed again. considering that i had them de-glazed about 3 mths ago, and same time had quality new pads installed, i am safely assuming it's the metal they are made out of. rotors, not pads.
normally, i'd have replaced them with slotted ones. but as i am at fork in the road now, one leads to "keep it" and other one to "rid of it", i'll let it be as is for some time. i am watching coolant level for HSD. it appears slowly but steadily going down. if that's the case, i'll get it fixed under warranty, and away she goes. i can't stand cars that take oil or coolant, never a good sign.
moan is not back yet.

i always had to add coolant to the inverter reservoir about once a month. no leaks, just seemed to use coolant.

getting back to the topic of the thread. I have an 08 LE V6 and it too does this when backing out of the garage on cold mornings, so it's not just a TCH thing. brakes are functionally fine. if and when it gets to really bothering me i plan to sand a bit of the pad off the leading edge of the pads and also to reapply a bit of high temp brake grease to the back of the pads
