Thumbs down Recall Fiasco

I took my 2009 TCH in last week for my usual free oil change at the dealer. When I arrived they informed me I was getting the oil change and recall. I asked how long it would take and the lady said 2 hours. I told her no way, I am on my way to work and I have 45 minutes if you can do it. You should have informed me YOU had scheduled the recall, NOT ME. This week I relented and made the 2 hour appointment. I arrived sat down and 25 minutes later the same woman informed me the car was ready to go. WOW, doing a 2 hours recall in 25 minutes is a miracle! Now the facts. They did not inform me what the FLASH was for and how it helped me. They ground off the entire end of my accelerator which I didn't want done but they refused to FLASH without the grinding. They did not remove padding because my floor mat had not been moved, ALL MY DIRT was still exactly where I left it. The store service manager is on vacation this week but I intend to return Monday with my March 22, 2010, New York Times article which states that: "Toyota has told dealers to provide replacement pedals only if customers’ cars had already been repaired, and the owners had asked for them. “Accelerator pedal replacement is based on specific customer request only,” said the memo, which was addressed to dealers, service managers and parts managers. “Dealers are not to solicit pedal replacement.”
I purchased a NEW car and they grind down the accelerator and expect me to accept it??? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Get ready Mike Smith Toyota, here I come!

I had our '07 TCH in for a scheduled oil change last winter and asked if they could do the pedal mod. They had the car for about an hour then returned it - no pedal mod (It doesn't look as it even needs it).

As far as the firmware flash, the hybrids already have this feature so no need to do any firmware updates.

I think the whole deal is a laugh myself. Toyota is just trying to cover all bases. As to the flash, I don't know but they said they had to do it. I don't think they know what they are doing.

When they fix the pedal, they don't grind it down. It's replaced entirely with a new but shorter pedal.

When they did my 2007 TCH, they replaced the pedal, cut away some of the floor carpet from behind the pedal but did NOT do a computer flash. I spoke with the service rep and he confirmed that the flash is not necessary on the Camry Hybrid models.

A co-worker of mine has a traditional 2007 Camry and they did all of the above on her car plus the flash since it was needed.

Sounds like you had a miscommunication with the dealership of scheduling the work to be done on your car. They'll tell you a worse-case scenario time that it might take to do the work of 2 hours but if they got it done in 25 minutes, they must not have been very busy at the time you were there so you lucked out.

I had the same experience as regztfen with my dealer. I took the thing in for the oil change and got hit with the, we need to do keep your car to the recall work. I was livid, because 2 hours became 4.5 hours and had my children with me. Nothing like 2 bored children in a car dealer whilst the sales guy (I pity him) tried to sell me a new Toyota. I regret it now, but I lost my te,per with the poor guy.

I really wish that Toyota would keep the car forever. Aside from a horrible experience with Chevrolet, this is the worst ownership experience that I have ever had.

SORRY! But they DID GRIND down my pedal and would NOT replace it and they did not take anything out from under the floor carpet; ONLY GRIND DOWN THE PEDAL. I talked to Toyota Customer Service (you are NOT allowed to call district offices) they told me that if I went back to the dealership later this month they would have NEW pedals and would replace it if I asked or CALL THEM BACK.

When they told me 2 hours I told them now and they were very upset. I scheduled another time this past week and they told me 2 hours also. I SPENT 20 MINUTES FOR THEM TO DO THIS! Do you really think they did all they were suppose to do??? Of course NOT!
