2007 Camry Hybrid and USB

hello

i have my sights on 07 Camry Hybrid. She's one of those loaded ones. Nav system with JBL headunit. Has auxiliary input and 6cd changer.
Unfortunately, all my music is on 18Gb USB sticks, as I have 2 Pioneer with USB headunits in my current vehicles.

any ideas if that auxiliary input can be made to work with USB? after damage done buying car, hate to spend another $200 to buy a larger size player.

I also had a 2007 TCH which I recently traded up to a 2010 TCH. The 2010 has the USB interface.

I believe you'll need a USB to 3.5mm mini jack to get it to work.

Should be around $10.

You'll need a VAISTech VML to use your USB sticks with the factory nav unit.

No such animal. Aux jack accepts audio only, it can't automagically read music from a USB stick.

i understand that. was not looking for direct solution, but for a fix.

sounds like that VML might work. it is plugged into the headunit, and turns on and off from the key, that should serve my purpose. i knew there should be something. thank you!! appreciate good advice.
now need to hunt it down to find out how much it is and how much will it take to have it installed.

I use a Garmin Nuvi portable navigator with built-in MP3 player. It has a 3.5mm audio out jack. I can take a male-to-male cable with 3.5mm jacks on both ends and plug it into the port on my former 2007 TCH with JBL sound system and play everything through the Nuvi. The NAV guidance prompts also play through the JBL and will mute MP3 playback to yield to NAV guidance.

Not perfect, but it works.

Now I have a 2010 TCH with factory NAV and USB port on the JBL. My MP3 tunes are on an SD card and I have a universal card reader with USB connection. Plug the card reader into the JBL USB port and it works just fine.

You guys are lucky in the States. They've only just released the TCH here in Australia, and we still get the old 5th gen nav unit like your 2006-2009 models. Aux only, no USB.

for Toyota.

Just thought I'd add to this, I'm going to add a USB port above the AUX jack inside the centre console box. Going to use one of these;

All I'll need then is a USB printer cable to connect this port back to the VML box.

have VML ordered. will post how it works itself out later. it is a pricy toy, at $319. have seen them for 299, even for 279, but manufacturer is adamant that anything below 319 is unauthorized and will have no firmware support.
plus, even at this price, they charge for shipping. cheapskates.
but if it works as advertised, i will have infinite expansion for music storage. where i'm going to get all that music anyway?

.

just a fair warning, as i have received my VML 2 days ago. they have all kinds of devices showing as being able to be connected to that unit. including ipod and SD cards.
it has only usb port. so, keep in mind, you'll end up with a bunch of adapters to be purchased to connect. it comes only with male/female usb cord. I am not aware of any ipod or sd card that plugs directly into usb. 20 bucks more on purchase price ($319 plus $20) will give you HDD cord. Seagate HDs they recommend for the unit are around $250 tax included.
I'll have it(VML) installed Sunday (another roughly $120) and report how it works.
So far, it is a very pricey project.

VAIS VML final install/review

ok, here's the final report.
had it bought: $330 with shipping
had it installed by car toys (considering all hybrid electronics, opted for pro install, in case it goes sour. warned their manager, he said - we break it, we fix it.) same time, i added subwoofer output in the trunk, so install was about $230 with tax. VAIS VML itself would have been around $100.

DO NOT INSTALL IT INTO GLOVE COMPARTMENT. i wanted to have it canceled, but easy access, planning on adding HD later. installer installed it (Velcro) onto the rear glove compartment wall. it all looked ok when i picked the car, except that car toys did not have a single usb drive to test it out. who would have thought, but... also, they did not know how to set pins on VML. whatever. by the time i was 10 minutes away, i had it all setup simply by reading manual. when i inserted usb into vml, i found that glove compartment door will not close now. so, i ended with VML velcroed to the bottom of the glove compartment door. even with that, usb barely fits when door closes. also, took much of glove compartment space out. it's a BIG box.

i hassled with it yesterday, sort of made it work, it did not want to recognize more than 20 files in a folder, but i finally got it all working this morning. same time, had my basslink200 connected.

guess, time for final impression. $560 price tag on something that is very much looking and working like maybe $100 for the piece plus install. i just can't get over this thought that it's nothing more that a usb adapter with very basic onscreen display. i understand that it is custom tailored for toyota. sounds like being lexus compatible made it eligible for very high price tag. well, it's done.

function wise, so far, it is unimpressive. it creates additional cd changer type display on nav. it has to have at least 2 folders to function. then you have a choice between folders and between files in folders. i have used, so far, only basic skip/up/down controls. i think, there's way to see the files list, so far, i could not get there.
the audio mode button is supposed to switch between cd changer-cd changer 2, which is VML unit-fm1-fm2-am. so far, there's a major lag now with all this. yesterday, it was showing mode selection on display, does not today. sort of have to wait and guess what is playing - cd or VML MP3. guess, i'll just take cd-s out to remove guesswork.

on my book, it is not worth the money, period. maybe i should have spent more time looking for usb toyota adapter, or something. or just called cartoys or fry's and asked for that. does not look like 300 bucks, does not work like 300 bucks in times when electronics are cheap and adapters are all over and for everything. also, like i said, just imagine all the adapters you need to buy extra for ipod other memory storage.

they have tiny support forum off VIAS Tech site. i spent quite some time yesterday there, trying to figure out why vml will not recognize more than 20 files in a folder. found that it's only 2 pages forum, with only about 150 users. also, has unpleasant attitude. if admins do not know the answer to the question, it is ignored. and i have no doubt their admins are their tech support same time.

basslink did its job, and too good. now i have to tame it down to almost nothing, or it's too much bass.

well, like Othello said: the moor has done his job, the moor can retire. i'm out of here.

Grom USB/iPod Car Interface Adapter

Just FYI. The Grom USB/iPod Car Interface Adapter will provide you with a USB capability. It sells for about $125. Just Google it. I'm getting ready to install this on my NEW Toyota Tacoma.

This will let you add a USB port to an existing radio. With a USB port, you can use a thumb drive or hook up a hard drive.
