Gas Mileage for Camry Hybrid

I am planning to buy a Camry Hybrid 2007-2011 model. My daily commute is 130 miles (80% highway).

Will a Hybrid be worth this commute or should I just go for a plain 4 cyl Camry LE?

If your driving habit is truly 80% highway I probably wouldn't get the hybrid - it would be difficult to justify the price premium for only a small improvement in mpg (or l/100km).

The TCH is comparable to the XLE trim level so not a great price premium but...

+1

You'll see the biggest mileage difference with city-type stop-and-go traffic.

If you are choosing between a plain LE and even a base Hybrid, the price premium is not worth it even if 50% of your driving was in the city. The Canadian base TCH is very well equipped and the price reflects that. If you are comparing a TCH with a comparably equipped 4cyl LE, the price difference is ~$2000. Some provinces still have hybrid rebates which can make the price difference almost nil.

BTW, in Canada you have to pay to get dealer invoice cost, the 2 places I am aware of are CarCostCanada.com and the Automobile Protection Association. They will give you info on what invoice is as well as any incentives that are currently in place. On the TCH the invoice is very roughly 9% less than MSRP.

Have fun choosing

FWIW my 2010 with 5000 miles on it is averaging 38 mpg for combined in town and freeway driving.

The variable that changes any "worth it" calculation is the price of gasoline.

The easy variables are out the door price difference , daily/yearly mileage driven , length of loan and mpg difference between two Camry's.

I commute 180 miles per day and when I bought , the price of gas was $4.00 . My math indicated that at 2 years 8 months the price difference broke-even... Also your less emissions output is a benefit , but hard to dollar value. Also you see lots of LE's on the road and very few Hybrids - so that may have some value to you - it did to me.

Also the availability of exterior colors ; the options you desire and available incentives will play a factor beyond the "worth it" math.

Test Drive both ...
