When we purchased our 2007 TCH I made the decision to switch to a fully synthetic oil with hopes it could make a few tenths mpg improvement and keep the sludge down for our limited driving schedule. Our '92 Camry (original owners) shows quite a bit of sludge despite religious oil changes per recommended intervals.
Today comes a notice from Toyota labeled Maintenance Schedule Update boldly printed on the envelope. I open it up to read Toyota has completed a long term study and is transitioning to a SAE 0W-20 synthetic lubrication standard. The 2010 Camry is the first Toyota model to achieve this certification.
Timely notice since I've just scheduled the initial oil change for our 2010 TCH later this month and was planning to ask for the synthetic service. We'll see if it affects the price at all now that it has become "standard".
They've also upped the service interval to an 10,000 mile or 1 year interval from the former 5,000 / 6 month interval for NORMAL operating conditions.
We border on the severe service since 90% of our use is short, in-town trips so barely rack up 10,000 miles per year. I'll probably stick with the 2x per year interval.
They also note the Maintenance Required indicator will continue to trigger at the 5k mile interval.

i priced the toyota 0w-20 while i was at the dealer last and it was $9.82/qt, so i'll be curious to see how much they plan to charge for these oil changes. especially since the v6 camry has a 6.5qt sump. but i guess it'll even out since oil changes will be half as often.
i've been doing 1yr/10k oil change intervals on all my vehicles since the early 90's and have never had a lubrication related engine failure. my favorite flavors are Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, or Valvoline Synpower; whichever is on sale when i go to buy oil at Wally World. i've only seen 0w-20 by Mobil though...

I'm a returning Toyota customer and got the free 24 month Maintenance incentive deal when we bought the current TCH back in March. They said the synthetic service was qualified under this program. Perhaps they already knew of this program?

Might add the "certified" synthetic is strictly SAE 0W-20. Toyota says if that is not available you "may" use SAE 5W-20 but MUST replace it with 0W-20 within 5k miles/6 months.

Pardon me, but I set my maintenance triggers in the onboard computer thru the NAV. Doesn't this over ride any internal ones that will default to if this not set from within the NAV?

Why is that oil so expensive where you live? Here in Quebec, we sell it 5,25$ CDN, which is something like half the price you tell. The price for an oil change is 48,95$ CDN.
This sounds like good news to me. MY 09 TCH is coming up on its next 5000 mile oil change. I have been using synthetic oil (Mobil 1 5x20) since I bought the car with the dealer's blessing.
I haven't seen anything on Toyota's website about the change in the car's oil change maintenance schedule.
Is there a way for you to scan your letter and post it here? This way I can the letter to the dealer to insure that the maintenance schedule change won't affect my car's warranty
If you haven't been sent the letter, it may be because the synthetic service was certified only on the 2010 and 2011 4 cylinder Camry.
Ask your service advisor if you have any questions. I had my '07 TCH serviced with Mobil 5W-20 at an authorized Toyota dealer. They had no issues with the use of synthetic.
It's probably OK to use synthetic but only for each 5k interval.

I have a 2011 and I have not received a letter restating the service interval to 10,000 miles. However, I plan to do what I always do - take the 2 years of free oil changes every 5,000 miles and then when I'm on my own (after warranty), switch to 10,000 miles or once a year whatever comes first. I have owned Toyotas for many years and have never had a problem with sludge. Mobil 1 is great oil and should easily last 10,000 miles.

Actually these do seem to be separate systems. When my oil is changed the dealer resets the one that activates the "Maintenance Required" on the instrument panel display. They never reset the one that is part of the sat nav system. If I forget to do it, the sat nav will continue to display the warning, whilst the other display does not.
