Talking How to input navigation with car in drive

Hi fellow TCH owners,
Has anyone heard of a way to input an address into the navigation while the car is moving? My friend has an SUV from a different maker and he was able to alter his navigation so that while he is driving, his wife sitting next to him can input an address into the navigation. I wouldn't play around with it myself if I were driving, but it does get annoying when you can't even have your copilot do it unless your car is idle.

Yes, you can get an override unit from http://www.prestigioussociety.com/?page_id=138 to be able to do this. It's kinda expensive but works great and is easy to install, aside from having to slide the NAV unit out, which is not a big deal if you have the pictures posted on the forum.
Don't know if the part numbers have changed, but I used the TNV-168 on my '07 with JBL.
It's nice to be able to have the passenger use it while trying to find something.

Thumbs down

It is certainly frustrating. I got mine and we left the next week on a trip. It is so user UN-friendly I couldn't believe it. We packed the boat anchor of a book along with us and read while we on the trip. When we really needed it we were driving (of course) and the wife couldn't punch any buttons, then I remembered about voice activation - well I haven't found any "commands" anywhere to use voice commands.

After a while we just got fed up and pulled out the Magellan GPS I brought along (just in case) and within 15 seconds we knew where we wanted to go. Forget that high priced piece of trash in the dash, get an inexpensive GPS and you can program on the fly without all the hassle.

I did use the system over this past weekend and it worked fine programming while stopped but once we past our destination it started looking for the next location on the list and I couldn't turn it off. I also had a hard time hearing the voice commands, I'm sure there is some sort of volume button but I couldn't find it.

You can also make a custom version of the map DVD using the loading file from version 5.1 with the current version maps. Rip the existing DVD, take out the loading file, replace with the older loading file, make an ISO and burn a new DVD. It is a hassle, but once you do it, you can use the override function from the diagnostic menu.

It is more than ridiculous that Toyota is the only manufacturer that I know of that plays this car nanny game. This is one of the reasons I am anxious to sell my Camry.

Here is a link to the directions from a prior thread.
