Just new to a TCH only had it for 3 days but have read alot on the formes. I want to know if it is normal when you start the car and it stays in battery mode, no engine running, the ICE starts and the motor revs a bit but it shows fuel consumption full to the top of the gauge as though it is using maximum amount of fuel and it just stays there. I want to know if this is normal. When I start to drive the fuel consumption goes right back down and then fluctuates depending on road inclines or my feathering of the gas. I am in canada and I have figured out fuel milage from litres to about 42 mpg in U.S. gallons, that it mostly city driving, I am very inpressed. I have owned a Honda Hybrid in 06 for a couple of years and have read the forms and can keep the fuel consumption down by keeping the car in battery mode feathering the gas, ECO on, but am still wondering if it is normal for the fuel consumption guage to go up like that when you sit and the car is in park. Thanks in advance

Reason: addition
Yes this is normal. When the car is not moving and the gas engine is running, you are not getting any mpg, just burning gas. The engine should shut down after it runs awhile.
I want to know though does your gauge go to the top and stay there as though it is sucking full fuel
Yes, mine does that too. Think about it. The engine is running so you are using gas, and you're not moving, so you're getting 0mpg while sitting still. Mine does that for a little bit then goes back to electric mode, unless my traction battery is very low at which time the engine stays on to charge it.
I will add to what the others have said and state that the ICE will also stay on if it is cold outside and the engine needs to warm up. I sort of think of this is similar to a systems check when the car is started. it checks out the ICE and fires it up, then it shuts off if it is not needed. because you are not moving you really are getting 0 MPG, consequently the consumption gauge shoots all the way way up (as it should).
My dealer advised the ICE will operate if the engine is not at operating temperature, the battery needs charging or until the catalytic converter is at optimum operating temperature. This is to insure proper emissions.
Under 50, ICE will run and not stop at a light
Between 50 and 70, ICE will shut down at a light and may shut down if you exceed 40mph, and feather the throttle.
At 70, if you are at a stop for 7+seconds, the ICE will shut down and will then shut down at lower speeds if you feather the throttle.
Normal max temp is in the 91-97 range
I also live in Canada. What I normally do is switch the heater off at stop lights when the car is already heated. With heater on the engine will keep running. Heater off, engine switches off. For some reason the heated seats don't effect the engine, it will stay off. Had ours since 2007. I do this every winter. The ECO buttion only controls the AC power up time. Hope this helps.
