Saw some unofficial sales figures which indicate sales of the TCH have fallen from over 54,000 units in 2007 to less than 23,000 units in 2009. I didn't find any data for 2010.
I realize Toyota's overall sales have dipped (as have all car manufacturers' during the recession) but find the public's disdain for fuel efficient vehicles disturbing.
Fuel prices in the US are expected to spike up to $3.75/gallon by this spring. As for me, I'm ready to dump all use of fossil fuels and have:
Installed a geothermal heating/cooling system in the house
Have a Nissan all-electric LEAF on reservation

Nissan LEAF sounds good only if you don't have far to go and you have 7hrs @240v or 20 hrs @110v to wait for a charge depending on what charger voltage you use. Sure, you can do a 30 minute quick charge but that's using a 480v charger and it only gives an 80% charge. I would hate to get too far and there's no way to charge up, looks like you have to use a charging station. You would think they would have an on board charger with a retractable cord. I don't see this working or many sales unless they install charging stations all over the place and I don't see that happening do to low sales. And then they would have to charge you to charge up to help cover costs, electricity isn't free! I'll stick with a TCH, low sales or not.
Saw some unofficial sales figures which indicate sales of the TCH have fallen from over 54,000 units in 2007 to less than 23,000 units in 2009.
One dealer in our vicinity has 22 TCH's on its lot. They haven't moved one in some time as far as I can tell. I'm betting they're willing to deal. But I'm not ready to buy one yet.

Not quite true. Those are the charge times for a fully depleted battery. I only drive 10 miles per day so even the 120v overnight charge would replenish ALL of what I had used that day. If I opted for the 240v home charger I likely wouldn't even have to plug the car in every night. Perhaps an overnight charge 2-3 times a week would work.

The LEAF's charging software allows you to choose between maximum range or maximum battery life (not-to-exceed 80% charge level) at the L1 (120v) or L2 (240v) rates.
The wife drives our TCH. I'll choose the LEAF for the in-town driving which I do 90% of the time.

I noticed none of my local dealers are moving them either, they still have the same White/Black TCH's in stock from months ago.
I think I want one... but I want it in Blue! Can I get the dealer to paint it for me, or do I have to order one from Toyota? In that case I'll probably lose any bargaining chips I can get if I have to order one. Ugh.
I've never done this before, I always end up getting ugly grey cars because that's what the dealer has. Anyone have any experience getting a specific color?

Of coarse if you only drive 10 miles a day it won't take 7 or 20 hours to top off the battery. 10 miles a day isn't a gallon a gas in most cars either, less than $3 of fuel in a standard car and even less than that with a Hybrid. Living and working in the city will be the only market for these all electric cars, should work out just fine for you. SO what does the charging stations cost for the house? And will you have to pay an electrician to install it?
As fuel prices start going up to $5 a gallon, the Hybrids will start selling again, time to buy now before demand goes up along with the prices.
