soflada, thanks for posting that link and reviving this thread. Since this thread began, we did release a Prius-specific replacement battery, the DS46B24R YellowTop, which can be safely mounted in enclosed spaces, due to it's provisions for external venting. The information on the link you provided does specifically indicate in bold print, “if the valves do release they vent directly and there is no place to attach the vent tube.” in reference to our Group D35 YellowTop.

In the case of the TCH, what measurements do you suggest for either the OEM battery (seems to be a Panasonic) or your Optima to measure what kind of life is left in them? Is the measurement similar to other deep cycle batteries such as those found on sailboats?

TIA
David

I had my battery replaced at independent repair shop and they did not install the vent tube. I cannot figure out how to install the tube in battery fitting. My dealer will not help me and the independent shop too far away. Can you help me?

David, even though the fitment guide on our website indicates our Group 35 RedTops and YellowTops are suitable repalcements for Toyota Camry Hybrids, neither of those batteries has provisions for external venting and I cannot recommend a “direct-fit” replacement. I can tell you that the previously-mentioned DS46B24R battery does have external venting provisions, as well as our Group 78 RedTop and Group 27, 51, 34C & Group 31 batteries.

You can view the dimensions and all the performance specifications for all of our YellowTops here and all of our RedTops here as they will vary, based on size and color.

Geezer, without knowing what kind of battery was installed in your car, it would be difficult for anyone to offer you assistance, as the battery installed may not have external venting provisions. Typically, batteries that do have such provisions simply have small ports, where a vent hose (or hoses) can be attached to the battery. If you can post a few pictures of your battery it may be apparent whether the battery was equipped with vent ports and where they might be.

guys, you do not need red tops. they are starting batteries. you need yellow tops, they are "storage" batteries, made for slow discharge and large capacity backup for electronics. you should not be concerned with cranking (red) power, but with capacity(yellow) feature.
Jim, told you before and will repeat myself, though I know your answer from previous posts. your batteries do have openings with porous plugs, for outside venting. concern is, they vent directly into the trunk. though it's highly unlikely, as it's AGM batteries, there will be any hydrogene leak, AND COLLECTION OF IT TO DANGEROUS POINT, IN NON-SEALED TRUNK, of hydrogen, I do understand reluctance in recommending them.
like I said before - there is a very easy way to add proper tubes to yellow top, WITHOUT ANY MODIFICATIONS TO BATTERY, to connect them to OEM hydrogen vent tube. it's an outside add on, saying it's voiding warranty is like saying that battery bracket voids it too, because it is attached to the battery outside.
