I thought that thing was odd the first time I saw it too. But, it is "after" the primary air filter. So, technically it should never need to be replaced or get dirty. I think it has plastic rivets holding it in (if I remember correctly).

Maybe it "straightens" the air flow before the air enters the top part of the box and heads for the MAF? I'm sure the engineers saw a purpose for it. So, mine is staying in.

take a picture and post. not sure what you talking about, without disassembling the air box. MAF sensor does look as a metal grid screen, and is past thew air filter before throttle body.

In the top part of the air box (right above the air filter), there is a "screen" that is a the same dimensions as the air filter. Only it is very thin and is made from some fiber material. In other words you cannot look into the top section of the air box because this piece is in the way. It is a giant rectangle (like the air filter).

indeed there it is!!
looks like a post-filter.
nice. also, looks like part of filter box cover. just at a glance, i'd say to take entire cover off maybe ever 5 years and wash that screen? mild soap and rinse well? and dry well?
i'll do it this summer. thanks for pointing it out.
