TCH oil reviews in Canada?

Hi all,

Changing the oil in my "new to me" 50th Anniversary Edition TCH and wanted to see if any others have had experiene with different oils in cold climates. I'm a fan of the Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic for most all my other vehicles and bikes but chose Penzoil Platinum 0W-20 for the TCH. Spoke with a dealership in Calgary an they said most owners use the shop's 0W-20 and some just use the shop's 5W-20 (taxi drivers especially) due to cost.

Any advice or experience out there?

Toyota moved to the 0w-20 recently for most of their vehicles and extended the range to 10k miles.

I am using Mobil 1 0w-20 here in USA b/c most auto stores sell 5 quarts and a Mobil 1 oil filter for $29.99 + tax which is cheaper than a dealership synthetic change by far.

I haven't read anything bad on the Penz Plat and would probably use it in my vehicle if given the chance.

I also was going to try the www.eneos.us 0w-20 japanese oil next.

However It's going to take me 8-9 months to hit 10k miles.

All that said there is nothing wrong with using the dino oil 5w-20 every 5k miles. You'll just suffer some very small percentage of mileage like 0.5 or 1%.

I like the synthetic b/c of the constant start-stop the TCH engine goes through.

Unless you got the "free" 24 month maintenance package deal.

I switched to Mobil 1 0W-20 when I took our '10 TCH in for it's first oil change. The coupon covers the dealer change but cost me $8.50 or so to get the synthetic upgrade.

I live in a cold climate so the better viscosity of the synthetic is a nice bonus in the winter. We exhibit "severe" driving habits with mostly short trips so I've still been practicing the 5k change routine. That's only 3 changes per year for us.

When is Toyota going to update their silly MID reminder for the new intervals? It still is set for 5k. I know how to turn ours off but it's a pain for those who follow official Toyota guidelines and practice 10k change intervals.

0W-20 is hard to locate here, and expensive. I found only a few brands and only in quart jugs. Mobil was $17.95 per quart at a discount part store. The Pennzoil was still $9.95. I'm sold on the 0W-20 full synthetic and DIY 5000 km change intervals in Calgary climate.

Anyone used Rotella T6 in the TCH?
