Replace NAV radio with NON NAV radio?

Out of curiosity can a JBL Navigation Radio be replaced with a regular 6 Disc JBL Radio on the Hybrid?

At $200 for a map dvd it sounds more feasible to swap for a non-nav unit, buy a good garmin type gps, and sell the OEM navigation unit and maybe even make some bucks off the exchange.

Just curious.

or get good droid phone with navigation, for free or peanuts with contract. this is what I have done. why hassle with something else? or, if you have nav capable phone, download navigation app. be happy.

btw, that nav is not for navigation only. it has A LOT of useful features that you will lose.

Aside from the energy usage features for the hybrid engine and the maintenance reminders what else is there that I would miss? I really haven't used anything more than the navigation and radio?

Oh and the bluetooth (does the non-nav JBL unit have bluetooth?). Otherwise an aftermarket GPS with real-time traffic updates that I can still change/update while driving beats out the stock Navigation system, no?

haha, i'm wondering of the repercussions involved, I do have an Android but it seems silly to have to use another nav when your car has one... i'll look for your post. Thanks!

how about being silly and spending a grand - as that's what the real grand total will come up to?

I had same reservations you do. But I said - fick it, wise people will say nothing, and who cares about idiot's opinion anyway - and drove around with paid for GPS for quite some time, until I got my Droid. Now I HAVE ONLY SMALL ISSUES WITH dROID GOING STUBBORN ON SEARCHING gps, BUT OVERALL, IT'S A KILLER THING. mY WIFE CAN'T STOP RAVING ABOUT HOW GREAT IT WORKS ON HER cONTINUUM. Just got her out of trouble yesterday.

sorry for caps, fat finger always presses that button.

There's a WISE man, Dave Ramsey. He says "if you live now, like nobody else, later, you will live like nobody else too". Point is very simple. If you do not spend like most of the crowd around you does, later on, you will live like chosen few, not most of the crowd. If you follow the trends and buy because "it's on TV", and feel uneasy, not blended into chandala - tough, waste your $$.

Hugh, I spoke.

come to think about it, it's KHOOL-er being Android user, than so much passe nav or GPS. And you can do so much more with phone - search web, find place, call, and nav to it, all in one device. that is already paid for. and app is free... and gives great tech chat with pals in the car or a good looking blond... so much bs can be spun around it.

i'll just shake my head and retire from this thread

Very good points but the non-nav JBL unit doesn't cost a grand does it? I'm sure I've seen them for cheaper online. My idea is/was as originally posted: get the non-nav JBL, sell the OEM nav unit, buy a $100-$200 aftermarket GPS, and maybe even walk away with some extra cash.

go for it. are you going to do install yourself? you that handy and knowledgeable, to mess with all this on THAT CAR? I have been working on my cars since 1990, and I did not dare to. hence, installation costs come in play. Also, there's always chance for small hardware here and there. Shy of grand it prolly will end up.

I appreciate your opinion but my initial question is, as stated, a curiosity, wondering how difficult it would be, what the repercussions are, etc. I'm handy but I wondered if anyone else had input on this and considered it or even tried it. After all, questions on modifying your vehicle and sharing experiences is one of the reasons this website/forum exists.

I wonder if the wiring harness connections are similar on the Nav unit to the Non-Nav unit, outside of the GPS antenna connection and other connectors (maybe to the car's computer for monitoring fuel efficiency, etc?) and if so would it not be a simple swap.
