What should I know about my upcoming 5,000 mile checkup?
2014.5 Camry Hybrid XLE, currently 4,700 miles... suppose to bring it in at the 5,000 mile mark?
supposedly, they really don't do much, they just look, and top off anything that maybe low.. but I can't see spending lots of money if it costs money, for them to do nothing... but I want to hear from everyone with knowledge and experience, what is the proper thing to do, get done, etc..
It is just a fluid check and tire rotation. Unless you do like I did and have the first oil/filter change done at 5K. It was still free, as you get 2 free oil changes in first 2 years, along with the 5k checks up to 25k.
For whatever reason, the dealer changed the oil in my car at 5K miles, twice at 10K miles (the first time they put in 5W20), again at 20K miles, and then once again at 25K miles. No one could definitively explain why. I think the mechanics are just used to changing the oil every 5K miles. In any event, I've currently got 31K miles on the car and have not yet paid anything for oil changes.
I took my '13 TAH in for a 25k service, which is not supposed to include the oil change, and they changed the oil with 0w20, too. No charge for any service so far, either, due to the 'free' maintenance program. I agree that the mechanics just do it without paying attention to the recommended change interval. When I saw the oil was changed, I asked the service advisor about it. He just shrugged his shoulders. It probably happens a lot, from that shrug!
I didn't pay anything for the first 6 services. Just take it in to the dealer and ask them to wash it before they return it. I think the 35,000 mile was the first time it cost me anything.
"...just take it in to the dealer and ask them to wash it before they return it...."
NEVER as the dealer to wash your car if you care about your paint. They're notorious for putting all kinds of swirls on it for you. Best leave it till you get home and use your own 2 bucket method to maintain it as pristine as possible.
I have signs during maintenance in all four windows stating: Please Do Not Wash even though they normally don't.
I know people who have it written in their contract when they purchase the car. Absolutely no washing, even during the dealer prep. They want to take that white plastic off themselves.

well, it has gone over 5,000 miles, and we have the service light on, but the service date setup appointment for the 5,000 mile mark is early January... so, still gotta wait about 3 weeks before we take it in...
You can change it. I called yesterday at 11 am and got in for a 5k style service on my car at 930 am today.(it has 20k on it)(I'm doing changes at 5k,15k,25k going forward)
wife takes it in today this afternoon for the 5,000 mile check, but it is now 6,000 miles.. wish they would give us a free wash,, it's too cold outside to play in the water... I know, someone said they leave swirls... it rains al the time here anyways,, and muddy..
they looked at it,,, and washed it, looks nice! was too cold here to wash anything for awhile.. of course since it's woman, any questions I have she has no clue... oppps! did I say that out loud? LOL
We did get a nice printout, like a bar chart with pretty colors for stuff checked..
