My mom's Saturn SL1 had the Check Engine Light on. I whipped out my OBDII Scanner (paid only $150) and found it to be the EGR Valve giving her problems. Here's how you fix it:
-Disconnect your battery, not a joke, this is so your computer loses its error codes.
-Look in your manual and find out how to remove it, otherwise search online for the location and removal procedure.
-Once it's out, spray it with Carb Cleaner (not the stuff you put in gas, but in an aerosol can) and let it soak.
-After it has soaked for a good 10 to 15 minutes, I like to scrub it with an old toothbrush (that's no longer in use) to get any stuck particles off.
-Work the valve piston up and down, but don't spin it or try to work it side to side.
-Dump all of the carb cleaner out.
-Use compressed air (no special PSI) to blow the remaining liquid out.
-Make sure its dry and then put it back on the car.
-Make sure everything is as it should be.
-Reconnect the battery and drive the car around as usual. You're done.
Good Luck, and it's easier than it seems.
