Quick ?

I have a 97 V6. Can I replace the jug like resonator/ silencer the is between the throttle body and the air box? I was thinking about replacing the thing w/ a small intake tube. As I understand it, it's only there to keep it quite. If I do this am I going to get a cel? I've searched for a while and came up empty. Hope you all can help me.

Thanks

nope, no worries about CEL...go ahead and do it...just make sure all the sensors go on the new intake

if you take the small black box (resinator near the throttle body it will improves air flow, but if you didnt know theres also another Resinator inside the front bumper. if you take off the resinator inside the front bumper you will suck more air + cooler air.

if you remove the resonator between the tb and airbox, you will loose top end power.

if you want to do anything with it, make it bigger. that will net you 2-5whp, depending on how big you go. bigger is better.

If I make it bigger I might as well replace the whole thing. Can you explan why I would loose top end power?

Thanks.

So basically get a short air intake and a cold air extension; or get bigger plumbing for the air box back?

the little chamber between the tb and the airbox, toyota spent lots and lots of time to get the correct resonic frequency for the air. they arent the only company to do it, pretty much all japanese compnaies have them on their engines.

MY OWN guess would be that the lower frequency of the sound of the air is much more 'rough' allowing it to mix with the fuel better, whihc is why a bigger resonator inline will provide a better power, being bigger, it makes a lower, deeper tone.

this is the same theory as those 'tornado' things, they agitate the air, allowing it to mix better. smooth air flow wont mix as good as a rough one.

you can try this yourself, take it off and cap it with a bottle cap, go for quick spin and you WILL notice the loss of power.
