Troubleshooting Distributor

Quick, general question:

My ignition coil looks "beat up" and tested out of spec, but I do get a spark from it when I turn the ignition on.

Could my car not be starting because of a bad coil, even though I get a spark?

Thanks!

To quote Lionel Hutz Attourney @ Law

"Now.... There's a spark....and... there's a SPARK !"
So it can be there & weak, but not enuff for ignition.

It was occasionally not starting, until I tried to fix it. Now it won't start at all.

I replaced the rotor and dist cover. When I checked for a spark with the cover off, there was a pretty good spark from the coil, and it was arcing to the base of the coil and elswhere on the innards of the dist. (Not sure where it should spark to when the cover is off.)

If it's arcing to the base of the distributor you have a crack in the coil itself and it is grounding itself out, causing a weak or no spark condition. Replace the coil and it should start right up. You don't say what year your car is but this is a common problem on a generation 2 (87-91) Camry, although it can happen to any of the first 3 generations (those generations that used a distributor).

jefe,

About 5 or 6 years ago I replaced the coil in my niece's 91 Camry with the 3SFE 4 cylinder engine. Her problem was more of a misfire in damp weather. Anyway, I was able to purchase a Borg Warner (aftermarket coil) in stock at Pep Boys for about $40, just in case you didn't want to wait. That did solve her problem and the car is still running perfectly today. The dealer wanted to replace here whole distributor for $600.

Ultimately, it turned out to be the coil. New coil did the trick. Thanks for the input!
