Synthetic Quickie...

I've been floating around on the Synthetic VS. reg. Oil threads and it seems that Synthetic is just better.

If you get leaks, its cuz the leaks were already there and they'll need to be repalced.

Well i need to go to get my oil change RIGHT NOW actually so i need some quick help. its already been 6,500 miles since my last.

I wanna go synthetic blend two times and Seafoam after the second time Before I go fully synth.

So is this a good idea to do Synthtic blend this time and the next. My 98' camry has 59,256 miles right now. The oil is 5W-30 should i try 10w-30 in a synthetic blend ??????

refer me some nice priced good quality synthtic blend oils. I'm thinking mobil1 synth blend or castrol syntec blend.

at 59K miles, you shouldn't have leaking problems!
if i were you i'd stick with 5w30 for your area (chicago) since your winters are harsher!
Dino oil is just as good as synthetic.....its just that synthetic breaks down slower...Is 6500 your typical timeframe for oil changes (if yes..then go synthetic). If you push your car (like some people here for autox..then yes synthetic is good for you). If your the dude that takes his car every 3K miles for an oil change..then both are great for you. Are you planning on doing this DIY or having someone else do it (cus synthetic by others is really expensive..and that deters people from going the syn route)...most people here on this site do it themselves..and hence justify spending 20-25 per oil change on oil/filter.

agreed. it's good you're trying the safe route but 60k is relatively young of an engine.
and maybe you should stik to the 5w oil because of where you are. either that or go to 5w when winter hits.

more homework? try:

www.bobistheoilguy.com
and
www.thecarbible.com or www.carbible.com

edit:

and i say if you do it yourself, the dollars should balance out---you can wait longer to change the oil and there's no fee for the service.

Alright, I just got back from autozone.

I bought 5W-30 Mobil Clean 7500 Synthetic Blend Motor oil @ $3.09 a Qart.

Does that sound about right for my car with 60K.

I figure I'll just go blend this first time, Seafoam before second time which will be fully Synthetic.

Does it sound good???

Thanx for the quickies, JHBhatia, Rningonfumes

crap the only thing is that I'm not doing it myself. a freind told me that they do it at a mechnic shop near my house for $5 if you bring the oil. I'l see.

^^ $5 bucks is a good price, if its a 4cyl they would need 3.8qts, if its a 6cyl they need 4.6qts. Just don't forget the oil-filter. I use mobil1oil+toyota filters.

Synthetic oils all hype little performance

I researched the issue on http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi The best experienced people say its a rip off . Only benefit on really cold start ups. My Volvo was never fed anything special & was not burning oil at 250.000km . It is still on the road When I last had it compression was still like new . This was in a very cold climate but high% of long highway drives . Short trips kill engines quick - some faster than others . My 97LE 4 cyl is at 180,000 km & just started slight smoke at start up . I have been using synthetics in winter without any fancy change over regime -- also BS in my mind

I would just put mobil I synthetic in it and be done. No need for the rest of the dancing around. Mobil I will clean your engine slowly over time (best way to do it IMO) There is no need for a seafoam purge IMO.

You can argue all day long what is "needed" compared to what is "overkill", but in the end NO ONE REALLY KNOWS for YOUR car!

The only way to tell what you need to do for your car would be to put oil in it and run it 3000 miles, have the oil tested. Have it tested every 1000 miles after that and see when it wears out. Then use that info as a gauge for all future changes.

Anything else is a GUESS, and just a GUESS. Anyone's guess is as good as anyone else's.

3000 miles is the extreme conservative guess, 7500 miles would be the opposite

The real amount for MOST cars is somewhere in the middle.

I choose to just buy mobil I synthetic and change it when Toyota says to (5000 miles for my car) sure it is overkill and it is a waste of money, however, I know 100% that my oil is ALWAYS within spec no matter how I drive or where I drive or what I do.

I also tend to keep cars for 10 years or 150k miles. I know many here keep them longer. If you are a long term hold person, it is worth it to have piece of mind. If you flip cars every 2 or 3 years, put whatever oil you find on sale in if you change it at all

What filter should i get with the Oil I bought --> 5W-30 Mobil Clean 7500 Synthetic Blend Motor oil

or it doesn't really matter about the filter? Should just get the one the mechanic installs.
Will it make a big diff.?

for the filter - AVOID FRAM!

The factory Toyota filter is fine
The Mobil I filter is better (at twice the cost)
The purolator pure one is a good choice as well

I have a 1994 Accord 4cyl- normal mileage 25mpg city, using Valvoline high mileage synthetic 5w-30, after 6k miles with this oil mpg dropped to 22. After change went back to normal.
1986 Volvo 740 running on 10w-30 Mobil 1 syn., normal mileage 20mpg at around 5k dropped to 17. Changed it 3 days ago and i'll see if mpg will go back to normal.
Dont have 5k on the Camry yet.

What kind of time frame are we talking when you say 6500 miles? If it is a lot of short mileage trips and a long time frame you might as well be just as good off running dino and changing in a shorter time frame, as a lot of problems can come from contamination/acid build up from short trips.

switching back and forth from synthetic to Dino can cause sludge to build up...

In my opinion Castrol GTX is one of the best/economical Dino oil's to use..

Mobile 1 is one of the most widely used synthetics and that I use in my celica and land cruiser

But Royal Purple is one of the best in terms of synthetics (very expensive too)

great reviews..
