USA after market rust proofing?

Last night I picked up my special order 2006 Camry with VSL and side curtain air bags. (By the way, the car was made in Japan because it was special order.) The dealer wants to sell me an after market undercoating package and a corrosion package. He said Toyota no longer rust proofs their cars in the factory. I had always heard that as soon as you drive the car, a rust coating package was useless. I'm wondering if this is a worthwhile investment, or if the dealer is trying to transfer more money from my pocket to his.

Any comments would be welcome.

Read the fine print. Some policies would only pay up to what you paid for the rustproofing. None will cover rust from the outside in. Basically as far as I am concerned the are useless.

u cant avoid rust, its inevitable unless ur car is made of plastic....BUT ITS NOT! ....... ....my 93 v-6 is still iin very good shape (as far as rust wear and tear goes ) with 220000 on the body and 3400 on the engine....the only rust i really have is the y-pipe which is perfectly normal and a bunch dents i have in the car, they are not problematic though and not rust would even be evident if the dents and otehr damage werent ther. No rust on the underside is noticeable as well except in expected parts.

I personally wouldnt worry about rustproofing but I live in Tennessee and it is not a big deal down here. However if you live in an area that is prone to rust it may be agood idea to have it undercoated. I would probably check into some pricing at different places though. Tell the guy you want to hold off on the undercoating right now but make sure you can get it at the same price later if you decided to do it.

You can prevent rust though by jsut making sure you maintain the car well. Wash it on a regular basis and make sure you at least spray the under carriage on a regualr basis also to prevent salt and dirt builb up from starting on the undercarriage.

no point getting it from the stealership

I'm pretty sure that the cars still get a rust-proofing from the factory, just to cover their own butts or else people will possibly start going in after 1/2 year and complain about rust on their brand new car

and also, when you pay the stealership to do the extra pacakage, they usually give it out to an aftermarket shop to do it anyway and then overcharge you a lot

so if you're worried, you may as well go to krown rustproofing or something and just do it there- should be about a bill only for that piece of mind, and a worthwhile investment to respray every year if you live a place that uses salt in the winter
