Are you sure it is the steering and not CV axle joints. Turn your wheels hard one way or the other and make sure ht boots that cover the joints are not busted. If they are and it is making noise you will need to replace he axle joint or the entire axle (which is actually easier to do). If it is doing it when you turn either way it is probably both of them that are bad. SO turn it to the left and check the boot on the left hand side. Then turn it to the right and check the boot on the right hand side.
If it is not the boots it could be any number of things. Tie rod ends. ball joints, control arm bushings, strut mounts and a couple of other things probably.
