99 toyota camry help

Anyonw know how the daytime running lights work? this is my first time with it, Is it just like having the headligts on while driving at night. i am unable to turn it to low beam. when the car is started does the dash, cluster and front and rear lights turn on rite away. mines usually take 10-15 secs before the dash, clusters, rear lights turn on but the fronts turn on rite away. any inputs will be ok,

secondly does any one know where the factory alarm system or module is located on the car? I bought the car and the previous owner lost the remote, i wanted to make sure that everything is still there before i go out and buy a remote for it but could not find where its located btw how can i find out the serial number for witch remote alarm i need to buy. any help woul be nice thanx.

I think I can answer your second question. The ECU of the alarm is located either under the driver's seat or behind the power mirror switch panel. Go find the ECU unit first before you buy any remotes. After finding the ECU unit, you now can have the info for the FCC ID of the remotes. buy the remotes according to the FCC ID. Good luck.

you still need programming. But if you find the ecu, you can avoid the hassle of buying the wrong remote. Also, you need to know the color of your ecu as well. For a 99 camry usually it is grey. but sometimes it can be black as well. You can PM me once you found the ecu with the info and I can lead you to the correct direction about your remote and programmig it. It is very simple to program.

How can i tell if i have a dealership alarm stystem or a factory alarm system. i was told that if the ecu is behind the blinking alarm security ligt on the dash than it is factory alarm and if the ecu is under the seat its a dealership alarm. btw i couldnt find it under the seats or behind the mirror control, do i have to remove the seat to find it or is it under the carpet?

To quote page 79 (in the 1999 Camry manual):

Daytime Running Light System

The headlights turn on at reduced intensity when the parking brake is released with the engine started, even with the light switch in the "Off" position. They will not go off until the ignition switch is turned off.

To turn on the other exterior lights and instrument panel lights, twist the [turn signal] knob to position 1 (your parking lights).

Twist the knob to position 2 to turn the headlights to full intensity for driving at night.

The headlights automatically turn to full intensity in the twilight even with the light switch in the "Off" position.

The daytime running light control sensor is on the top of the passenger's side instrument panel.

Do not place anything on the instrument panel, and/or do not affix anything on the windshield to block this sensor.
--------

So you can turn your headlights on manually (as usual) but you've been waiting for the sensor to turn the lights on for you. It takes ten to fifteen seconds because, for example, if you were driving in a wooded area with sun shining through the trees, you don't want the lights to switch on and off and on and off. It has to make sure you're actually driving in low light before the lights turn on.

Hope this helped.

(edit: oh, and don't confuse "full intensity" with high beams. Your daytime running lights illuminate to about 90% as bright as the standard low beams; low beams being "full intensity".)

I find at dusk my twilight sensor seems to go nuts. Anyone else seen this? When I enter a shadow, the headlights go on, when as soon as I leave the shadow, the headlights go off. It drives me nuts, because the cars in front of me might think I am trying to flah them.
