check engine light

anyone know how to check the codes for a 94 camry v6 xle? i guess it's an early model and is odb1. i thought you had to jump te1 and e1, but all that did was drop the rpm's. thanks

my check engine light stays on when i have it in the ON position and never shuts off until i start the car. wtf
