As far as macco is concerened... It is different for each one. I went all around my area asking people and finally landed at a Technicall College where I talked to the teacher who teaches autobody.
Basically, macco is a franchise, thus going to 1 macco is different from another much like going from 1 BurgerKing to another (bare with me). All BKs should make your food the exact same way, and should use the exact same ingrediantes... but SOME owners want to cheat you out of your money, and will use not-so-good ingrediants and you never know who is cooking your burger. Same with macco, IF the painter knows what he is doing, chances are the job will be just as good as a different place. If the owner of the macco shop you are going to go to is a fair guy, he doesnt tell his employees to skimp on materials (such as quality of primers etc).
I myself got a quote from macco to get a REALLY nice paint job and it was about 1400 after body work (I need to get a fender replaced, and a fair amount of dings and scratches out). I think thats with a 800 dollar paintjob, in which case I can drop down to the 600 but I'm not sure. I know I told them to double the clear coat and that added another 150-200 to the price quote as well.
Your best bet is to SHOP AROUND all you can. Now that it is winter time, you have much more time to shop around. I dont know about you but for some reason getting a new paint job in the winter just sounds wrong to me.
My 2cents.
