Been searching through TN to see if anyone has put 225/50/17 tires on 17x7 wheels. But I haven't found much so I'm doing a post here to see if anyone will respond. I'm currently getting 17x7 +42mm offset wheels for my 2000 Camry LE and I'm concerned both about ride comfort and safety. According to www.1010tires.com 's tire calculator, the closest size for a 17x7 is 215/50/17, but 225/50/17 will still be within tolerance. The thing is 225/50 will be slightly larger than the correct size and wider.
Now there are two reasons I want to get the 225/50/17: 1) More sidewall height so there will hopefully be more ride comfort. 2) More sidewall height and section width, so it will be a little safer going against road hazards like pot holes.
I need to know if anyone has tried this combination at all and whether or not it was successful. I won't be lowering the ride or anything else. I need to know if the tires will rub any part of the car and whether or not I will need to get my fenders rolled. Please help me. THANK YOU!
Sincerely,
Isaac Liao
ADDENDUM: Has anyone tried the 215/55/17 size. If so does it rub or does it work fine?

your gonna want to lower your ride if there is a wheel gap there. i have 205/45/17 on my 97 camry and the gap is like 4 inches. I think youll be okay with 50 series tires.
You're probably going to need spacers if you got 225. If you go 215, you should be fine. I wanted 225 on my wheels (50 offset wheels, 50 offset stock for the Gen 5) and I ended up getting 215 because 215/50R17 is the largest that the Gen 5 can fit with a 50 offset wheel. The stock offset for a Gen 4 is +43 I believe (not sure), but its definitely a lower offset stock than the Gen 5. I'm pretty certain that you'll be needing spacers.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.
I have 215/50/17 tires on a 17x7 40mm offset and I can barely fit my thumb between the tire and the strut. The front should have enough clearance, but your problem will be with the back wheels. 215/50/17 will be perfect. Ride is fairly comfortable and handling is better than the stock 205/65/15 tires I had on there before.
I find it difficult to understeer my car unless I'm really trying to do it. Otherwise, the tire usually chirps a couple times if I'm driving really hard.
Wouldn't getting spaces and pushing the wheel out mean that it might rub the fenders? Then I would need to also the get the fenders rolled. BTW, I read some a lot of the threads and I thought that +42mm offset is supposed to be "correct" for my 4.5 Gen Camry. Or is there like no correct answer? Thanks.

lol Yes, the offset is fine, but since its +42, it limits the size of the tire that you can use to 215. As far as using spacers and rubbing fenders, I've never heard of anyone having that kind of problem. Spacers only move the wheel out a few millimeters... not nearly enough to get near the fender wall. The only reason you'd need to get your fenders rolled is if (1) you have big wheels... such as 19s or 20s or higher... and (2) you're dropped on springs or coils.
17" wheels with a +42 offset and spacers with 225/50R17 tires will fit fine.
I don't see why you wouldn't go with 215/50R17 anyway. Your speedo doesn't change AT ALL while with the other one its off by 1.4%. The difference between 215 and 225 is not very big as far as width goes... and the 215 tire is lower profile (overall sidewall height) than the 225's so it'll look better. And you won't need spacers with 215 width tires. I don't see why the 215 isn't the better choice. Just get good quality performance tires and they'll be just as stiff as your stock wheels, and you won't have to worry about road hazards as much. Wheels aren't that easy to bend, bro... most people that dent theirs hit pretty big holes while going at a pretty high rate of speed... I've hit many potholes with mine, and nothing's happened. The only reason you'd think it was easy to dent a rim is because thats all you hear about... no one is going to make a thread saying "I didn't bent my rim today!" You know?

If you want to check out tire specs and how changing the tires will affect the spedo etc, use the Tire Size Calculator link on the 1010tiores site (or here if you're lazy http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp ). I know a lot of people use the Miata one, but the 1010tires one is much better because it lets you compare 4 sizes to the stock size at once, shows all the specs and even diameter and spedo difference, and has pictures showing the size difference + all the specs relative to the stock wheel (or whatever you want to use as a base point). It'll even show you a list of tires that support that size. Try it out it's great and probably could be of help to you.
I dont have a clue about all this offset jingle. I just never paid attention to it.
I dont know if this will help but I have the stock TOYOTA 17" rims with 225/50R17's.
Did you put the 225/50/17s on there? That is not stock size.
On Gen 5 Camry, the offset of the wheels is 50 mm and you have a different car than the OP, who has a Gen 4.5.
