struts going......

well, this is one of the things i have been dreading since... for a long time.

noticed a pounding noise in the car when going over bumps and took to mechanic and they said i need to have front and rear struts replaced. well, my question is... how much would you guys think it should cost to have this done? i dont think i should do this myself, and the shop is est 450 and upwards some...

and if i can get aftmkt stuts and have them put them in, would that be a good route...?

help.

Thirsty, dangerous, labor intensive work. Demands some tools, knowledge and sweat. Your call. Helps to have some experienced assistance, jack, stands, spring compressor, sockets...

I paid about $400 to have the wife's 96's Camry's replaced, but it was a "low mileage " take off set (strut/spring assembled) ... This was prior to being brave enough to do it myself ... I've since purchased an 04' wrx, and have now done springs on it ... If I had it all to do over again I would have replaced the strut/springs in the Camry myself and saved the coin, as well as upgraded them ... The install (on the wrx) was really alot easier then I thought it would be, and in retrospect, it looks even easier for the Camry ... If you have the tools and a bit of know-how, do it yourself ...

BTW: The clunking you describe sounds alot like what my wife had complained about ... Turns out the drivers side front spring had actually broken ...

97-00 camry have a upper strut mount problem, where they make noise on bumps. If you have less than 80k miles on car I would just replace the mounts if your camry falls into those yrs.

is strut disassembly kinda straightforward? {and universal?} if so i have a friend who has worked on plenty of GM's, and i imagine if i help and provide a couple cases of beer, he would be satisfied. this guy knows his stuff, no doubt.

changing your struts means that your alignment will not be the same as before; just a reminder. don't be suprised if your car doesn't go straight when the steering wheel is it its upright position.
