Sup all, 2001 camry 63,000 miles. The dealer says that my car is due for the timing belt service. In my haynes it says that it can last up to 90,000 unless operated in sever conditions. I already know that I will NOT be letting the dealer perform this service but I am thinking about the timing of it. Winter is coming soon and I would hate for anything stupid to happed to my ride. So I need feedback can my belt make it through this winter season and be swapped this spring or should I just get it done now?
What intervals do you guys usually change your belts at?
Ok kool So then the 4 cyl camry is a non interference engine... meaning I will not mash up my valves if the belt breaks?
Yup, the Gen 4, 4 cyl engine is non-interference.
Generally, Toyota engines with timing belts are non-interference, and those with timing chains are interference. There are a few exceptions though, but I don't know which ones they are.
I just changed mine on my 98 over the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend.
I was at 140,000 km (87,500 mi) so I was about 10 000 km early.
The reasoning was that the weather will get cold soon and I do not want to do it then.
If you go to the garage, or dealer it shouldn't matter to them when you coose to have it done.

I'm getting my belt changed and just an over all tune up next week...my car will be at about 89K. So far so good, cept it has trouble starting up if i shut it off and turn it back on again....hopefully new plugs will do the trick.
Sunday, My dad and I finally got the engine pulled out of the $500 1998 Camry LE. The timing belt was changed 70,000 miles ago, according to the service records. The timing belt is $20.00 at Autozone. Now that the engine is out of the car, its really easy to change it. But with the engine in the car, it will take a good afternoon for you to do it.
The 4cyl Camry uses 14MM and 10MM bolts to hold on the cover. They were really easy to remove just using a strongarm. Then there is the timing belt tensioner, it is held on with a 14MM bolt, loosen, don't remove it, and the belt will loosen. Then remove the belt. Put on the new belt, and reassemble everything. There aren't really torque specs for this cover because all it does is keep dust off, no oil circulates near the belt.
It shouldn't be that hard if you remove the passengers side wheel.

I changed it @95K. But when I took off old timing belt it was in very good condition and could have lasted another 30 to 40K but since i was in there i changed it anyways along with idler pullies. However I didn't changed the water pump and that sun of a gun is still working perfectly @170K. I am almost on my second timing belt due. Toyota water pump rocks!!!! may be?
It's supposed to be changed around 90 000 miles. You should be fine.
If the timing belt breaks, the engine just stops and you need to replace the belt.
and how about the 3VZ-FE engine?? If the timing belt brakes, will the engine stop and than just repalce the belt?? Help!! I've got on my timing belt now about 170000km (105000 miles)....

Yep same goes for the 3VZ. If it breakes jsut replace it and you should be good to go. ALong with any seals, water pump, tensioner and idler that may need to be replaced.
Another thing about t-belst. Just looking at them is not a very good way to tell if the beelt is good or not. They stretch over time and can be damaged by this. THey are not live serpetine or V-belts where they will crack and start showing signs of wear. I have seen them break at well under 60k miles and I have seen them go well over 120k miles(my Corolla and Pathfinder included). I did the t-belt on y pathfinder myself and when I took it off at 140k miles or so it looked jsut fine no signes of wear or anything but it may have broken the next day if I had not replaced it. You jsut never know.
