3rd Generation ahh cr@p i f@#$ed up!!!

so my front brakes pads were wore down to the metal since the grinding was getting louder so i decided to do them myself...bought new brake pads...took off the front right wheell...un bolted caliper and the flexible hose ((which i think i wasnt supposed to do)) and replaced the pads with ease...the thing is putting on the caliper back on was the uncertain part...it seems that the piston that push the pads together was too much out so i couldnt fit the caliper around the new pads...so i tried pushing the piston but then this green fluid came out...guessing it was the brake fluid...but the piston wouldnt go all the way inside..so i put a rag over it and beat the shit outta the piston till the piston was all the way in.... so i got it to fit over the new pads...bolted everythign back on...turned the car on....and now my front right brake wont work AHHHHHH....so i thought it was because of loss of brake fluid..so i filled it back to the max...and it still wont work... any suggestions...!!! help!!!!

"so i put a rag over it and beat the shit outta the piston till the piston was all the way in.... so i got it to fit over the new pads..."

did you use a hammer to "beat" it back in ? if you did you might have messed up the piston causing it to jam. always use a c-clamp with the old pad to "press" the piston back to the start.

word of advice my man...and not just on the brake caliper....dont EVER beat shit into place..it will NEVER work. If your going to work on a car you need patients and the know how..if your not sure..DONT DO IT! you deffinatly jammed up that piston. Did you try and pump the brakes to get the fluid thru the lines? If shit wont work you need to take that caliper back off and see whats up with the piston and make SURE you conected the brake line back up to the caliper properly so its actually getting the fluid. Seriously hammers and cars is a NO-NO!! have patients and dont be afraid to ask BEFORE you do it for the correct method.

Did you bleed the brakes? Your going to have to bleed them since you unbolted the brake line from the caliper.

Try bleeding the brakes first and see if that caliper works. If not your going to need another caliper.

when you say you unbolted the flexible hose do you eman you completely removed it from teh caliper. If so then you will need to bleed the brakes before you can really drive it. It is possible that the piston is not coming out because there is not enough hydraulic pressure to push it. This would be due to the fact that there is air in the brake lines. IT is also VERY< VERY possible you have gotten the piston cocked inside the caliper from Beating the shit out of it. IF you have done this then you can try taking a pair of very large channel locks that will wrap around the entire caliper and piston assembly and ever so slightly compress the piston more in hopes taht it will straighten out. Like someone else said if something doesnt go the answer is not a bigger hammer. HOpefully you did not damage the seals inthe caliper by cocking the piston to one side. If you did then you may need to either rebuild or replace the caliper.
If you did remove the brake line completely from teh caliper then you need to bleed the brakes if you did not do so. You will need someone else to help you with this and it is a little time consuming but nothing major. IF you are not sure how to do taht reply back in here and we can help you with that also. I jsut dont feel like typing more than I have to right now.

by bleeding means..well like it sounds. you disconnect the brake lines, pump the brakes the clear them completly of any fluid, rebolt it and fill the brake fluid back up. what you have is basicly an air bubble in the break lines which, well air is no sorts of pressure to push a caliper together to stop a car.

You don't need to disconnect / unbolt the brake lines.

Thats what the bleeder screw on a caliper / drum is for.

Yes.

The purpose of bleeding the brakes is to remove any air thats trapped within the system.

Air = bad.

Fluid = good.

Might as well bleed all of them while your at it.

Lesson for today. Don't beat the shit out of your calipers with a hammer.

Just use the hammer to keep the haynes manual open or to break the piggy bank for the new caliper.
